Franco Costanzo (* 5. September 1980 in Rio Cuarto , Argentina ) is a former Argentine football - goalkeeper .
Career
Club career
He started his professional career at River Plate in Buenos Aires in 2000. He was predicted to have a steep career, but was thrown back by various injuries. Nevertheless, he was still considered a talent and won the Argentine championship three times with River Plate . In the summer of 2005 Costanzo moved to the Basque club Deportivo Alavés in Spain , where he played 31 championship games in the 2005/06 season.
FC Basel
In July 2006, FC Basel bought Franco Costanzo for around three million Swiss francs from the current contract. After initial mistakes in the first half of the season, he played a great second half and was voted FCB Player of the Year. In the 2007/08 season he won his first Swiss championship with FC Basel .
Costanzo played the group stage of the UEFA Champions League with FC Basel in 2008/09 and 2010/11 . From the 2008/09 season he was captain of FC Basel and thus successor to Ivan Ergić , who voluntarily resigned from this position.
On April 13, 2011, the club management announced that the current contract, which was valid until the end of the 2011 championship, will not be renewed. After five years of working together, Franco Costanzo and the club could not agree on a new contract. His successor was Yann Sommer .
Olympiacos Piraeus
In June 2011 Franco Costanzo signed a three-year contract with Olympiacos . There he succeeded Antonios Nikopolidis, who had recently resigned . After only moderate performance, Costanzo lost his regular place to the young keeper Balázs Megyeri . His contract was terminated during the 2011/12 winter break. Costanzo was then without a club until he resigned on May 22, 2012.
National team
Costanzo was Argentina goalkeeper at the 1997 U-17 World Cup . In 1999 he was part of the Argentine squad that won the U-20 South American Championship and then took part in the Junior World Cup in Nigeria. His only appearance in the Argentine senior team came in 2003 in a friendly against Uruguay.
