history

Originally the area was settled by the nomadic people of the Taluhet . After the founding of Córdoba, the Spanish settled in 1573. In 1750, the region experienced an economic boom with the settlement of a monastery ("La Primera Colonización del Río Cuarto"). In 1776 the region was assigned to the viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata . The fortress of Santa Catalina, the safety devices for the bells and the fort built in 1782 by the commander Agustín de Balmaceda all date from this period. In 1784 Rafael de Sobremonte took over the rule of the region as representative of the governor of Córdoba del Tucumán.

On November 11, 1786, the city of La Villa de la Inmaculada Concepción de Nuestra Señora del Río Cuarto was founded. In 1829 the city was the scene of armed conflicts between the supporters of the federal states (Partido Federal) and the unified state (Partido Unitario).

From 1880, the region saw massive settlement of immigrants from Italy and Spain. In 1883 the current administrative structure of the city of Río Cuarto was introduced; the first mayor was Irusta Moses. In 1887 the city had 11,649 inhabitants.
