Swiss football championship

The Swiss Men's Football Championship is the national football championship of the Swiss Football Association (SFV).

It has been held since 1897/98 . Since 1933/34 , the Swiss champions have been the team that have occupied first place in the table after a season in league operations. Before that there was a preliminary round, divided into groups according to regions, and a final round in which the best of each group played against each other.

In the course of the 100-year history of the top Swiss football league, it has changed its name many times.

Overview of the different names since the founding of the league:

  • 1897 - 1930 : Serie A / Série A / Serie A
  • 1930-1931 : 1st League / 1 re Ligue / Prima Lega
  • 1931 - 1944 : Nationalliga / Ligue Nationale / Lega Nazionale
  • 1944 - 2003 : Nationalliga A / Ligue Nationale A / Lega Nazionale A
  • since 2003 : Super League , since then the name of the main sponsor of the league has been in the official name.
