Engelbert von Dolen († September 3, 1347 in Avignon ) was bishop of Dorpat from 1323 to 1341 and then archbishop of Riga until his death in 1347 .

Life

Engelbert came from a vassal family that had lived in the Riga and Dorpat monasteries since the 13th century . It is possible that he is identical with “Engelbertus de Estonia”, who enrolled at the University of Bologna in 1304 . It is documented for the first time in 1323, when he was elected as Dorpater Dompropst to succeed the Dorpater Bishop Nicholas. In need of confirmation of his choice, he went to Riga. There he could not obtain the confirmation because the Archbishop of Riga, Friedrich von Pernstein, had been with the Curia in Avignon for more than ten years and someone else was not authorized to confirm the election. Since Pope John XXII. Engelbert traveled to Avignon who had reserved both the confirmation of the election and the episcopal ordination. There Friedrich von Pernstein contradicted the papal confirmation, claiming that Engelbert had behaved incorrectly towards him and the Church of Riga. The reason for this was probably that Pernstein was inferior in a dispute with the Teutonic Order and therefore wanted to harm it by blocking new appointments to the Prussian and Livonian bishoprics.

After a review initiated by the Pope, Engelbert received papal confirmation of his election in November 1323. After the episcopal ordination, which was carried out by the Bishop of Frascati , Bertrand de Turre ( Bernardo de la Tour ), Engelbert went to his diocese on December 9, 1323. After he demanded an oath of allegiance from the Teutonic Friars who were active in his diocese in March 1325, the Landmeister protested against it . In 1326 Engelbert mediated a dispute over the opening of the gates between the city of Riga and the cathedral chapter. In 1336 he crowned the Swedish King Magnus II. In the same year he was asked by the Pope to demand, among other things, the return of the archbishop's goods for the still absent Riga Archbishop Pernstein from the Teutonic Order, with which he was largely successful. With Friedrich von Pernstein connected him the opposition to the Teutonic Order. Engelbert was present in Avignon in March 1341 when Friedrich von Pernstein died. Since his death took place in Avignon, Pope Benedict XII kept. the appointment of his successor. On October 18, 1341 he transferred Engelbert from Dorpat to Riga. The pallium was presented to him in Avignon by two cardinal deacons. Although he was asked by the Pope to go to his archdiocese, he continued to stay in Avignon. From there he continued his policy against the Teutonic Order without success. He died on September 3rd, 1347 in Avignon. His burial place is not known.
