Nihat Kahveci (born November 23, 1979 in Istanbul ), usually just called Nihat , is a former Turkish soccer player and current soccer coach .

Career

In the club

He started his career at Beşiktaş Istanbul , where he played from 1997 to 2001.

In January 2002 he moved to Real Sociedad San Sebastián for a fee of five million euros . There he developed steadily, so that he became one of the best strikers in the Spanish league . He finished second in the top scorer list in the 2002/03 season with 23 goals (as many as Ronaldo ) behind Roy Makaay (29 goals). He made a significant contribution to Real Sociedad's runner-up in the 2002/03 season.

On February 19, 2005, Nihat tore a cruciate ligament , which is why he had to take a six-month break.

From 2006 Kahveci played at Villarreal FC . On November 22, 2006, he tore another cruciate ligament and fell out for months. Upon his return, he became the most dangerous goal-scoring player on the Villarreal team .

In the 2007/08 season he finished second in the Primera División with Villarreal, behind Real Madrid and ahead of FC Barcelona , scoring 18 goals for the "Submarinos" and finishing fourth among the top scorers. The Spanish newspaper El Mundo voted him the best player on the team. The 2008/09 season was negative for him, so he often paused due to injuries and remained goalless in the Champions League and the league for over a year . Nihat played 80 competitive games for FC Villarreal before moving back to Turkey in July 2009 to his home club Beşiktaş Istanbul for a transfer fee of 4.5 million euros. With immediate effect, he ended his career as an active soccer player on January 15, 2012.

National team

After numerous appearances for the Turkish U-21 national team , Kahveci made his debut for the Turkish national team on October 7, 2000 in the qualifier for the 2002 World Cup against Sweden (final score 1: 1). He scored his first goal for the national team on October 6, 2001 in the qualifying game for the 2002 World Cup against Moldova , in which he contributed to the team's victory in the 78th minute (final score 3-0).

He participated with the Turkish national soccer team in the soccer world championship 2002 , the Confed-Cup 2003 and the Euro 2008 . In all three tournaments he reached third place with her.

After tearing his first cruciate ligament , he celebrated his comeback in the national team on October 8, 2005 in a friendly against Germany . The final score of the game was 2-1 for Turkey. His comeback after his second cruciate ligament tear in the national team was also successful. In the decisive qualifying matches for the European Football Championship in 2008 , he scored one goal in the away game against Norway (2-1 for Turkey) and in front of a home crowd against Bosnia-Herzegovina .

In the group game at Euro 2008, he made it against the Czech Republic , after Arda scored the 1: 2 goal, for the 2: 2 equalizer in the 87th minute and then for the winning goal in the 89th minute. This enabled Turkey to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Euro 2008 against Croatia . Nihat injured himself in the quarter-finals and was unable to play against Germany in the semi-finals.
