Arda Turan (born January 30, 1987 in Fatih in the province of Istanbul ), in Turkey as usual also just called Arda , is a Turkish football player . The midfielder has been under contract with Galatasaray Istanbul again since August 2020 .

Career

In the club

Galatasaray Istanbul

Arda Turan comes from the youth of Galatasaray Istanbul . In the 2005/06 season he played in the second half of the season on loan at Manisaspor .

For the 2006/07 season Turan returned to Galatasaray. In the Champions League qualifiers, he scored two goals against Mladá Boleslav and prepared three more. After the first leg he was praised by football experts all over Europe and became a regular player in the club and also in the Turkish national team, in which he made his debut on August 16, 2006 , thanks to his goals and assists in the Turkish league .

In the 2006/07 season he was voted the best young player in the Turkish league.

In the 2007/08 season Turan had a significant share in winning the championship with seven goals and 14 assists . On the 33rd matchday he scored a hat trick in a 5: 3 against championship rivals Sivasspor and thus opened the way to the championship. As a result, his contract was prematurely extended for another year. For the 2009/2010 season he was appointed captain of the team and has been wearing the number 10 ever since. In the 2010/11 season his team disappointed and only achieved eighth place. Turan was injured more than half the season with an adductor injury. While the media and parts of the fan community accused him of “listlessness”, transfer assumptions increased towards the end of the season, but they remained unconfirmed. Turan himself had previously shown himself to be open to intentions to change, but neither confirmed nor denied anything.

Atlético Madrid

For the 2011/12 season Turan moved to Atlético Madrid for a transfer fee of 12 million euros and a possible additional transfer fee of 1 million euros . When returning to Turkey, Galatasaray Istanbul has a transfer privilege. On the second day of the Primera División he made his debut in the home game against CA Osasuna in the dress of Atlético Madrid. On November 30, 2011 Turan scored his first goal for Atlético Madrid in the UEFA Europa League against Celtic Glasgow . He scored two goals in two minutes in a 3-1 win over Espanyol Barcelona on April 22, 2012 .

Turan won the 2012 Europa League with Atlético . He set up a goal in the final against Athletic Bilbao , which ended 3-0.

At the end of August 2012, Turan won the 2012 UEFA Super Cup with Atlético . In the final, Atlético prevailed against Chelsea FC 4-1, with the submission for the interim 3-0 to Falcao being prepared by him.

In September 2013 he extended his contract with the Rojiblancos prematurely until 2017 and it included a fixed transfer fee of 41 million euros.

On April 30, 2014 in the semi -final second leg of the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League , Turan scored the 3-1 final score and away win against Chelsea and thus sealed Atlético Madrid's entry into the final of a European Cup since 1974, which they defeated in May 2014 City rivals Real Madrid lost.

FC Barcelona

For the season 2015/16 Turan moved to FC Barcelona . On July 7, 2015, he signed a five-year contract until June 30, 2020 and cost 34 million euros, which can increase by 7 million euros depending on success. FC Barcelona had the option to sell Turan back to Atlético Madrid for 90 percent of the transfer fee by July 20. This was to protect the interests of a possible new club management, which was elected on July 18, 2015. A few days before the elections, the four presidential candidates agreed that Turan would remain and the option remained unused. Due to a transfer ban imposed in the 2015 summer transfer period, Turan - like his teammate Aleix Vidal - was only allowed to be registered and deployed at the start of the winter transfer period on January 4, 2016. He was therefore not part of the squad that won the Club World Cup in Japan in December 2015 . Turan finally made his debut on January 6, 2016 in a 4-1 home win in the first leg of the first leg of the Copa del Rey against Espanyol Barcelona in the shirt of FC Barcelona. His league debut took place three days later at the 4: 0 home win against FC Granada .

Return to the Homeland

After Turan had not played in the 2017/18 season, he returned to his home country on January 13, 2018 and joined Istanbul Başakşehir on loan until his contract with FC Barcelona ended on June 30, 2020 . This model gave FC Barcelona the opportunity to sell the transfer rights to Turan during the loan to another club. On matchday 32, Turan was expelled from the field for assaulting an assistant referee and threatening gestures against the main referee. He was banned for 16 games and also obliged to pay a fine of € 7,600. By the end of the 2017/18 Süper-Liga season , Turan played 11 times in the league (7 times from the start) and scored 2 goals.

In the 2018/19 season , Turan made his first season appearance after his suspension expired on matchday 10. He came on 14 missions (8 times from the start) without a goal of his own. In the first half of the 2019/20 season , 9 more missions followed (2 times from the start), also without a goal. At the beginning of January 2020, Başakşehir canceled the loan. Turan did not return to Barcelona, however, but kept fit privately. His contract formally expired on June 30, 2020.

For the season 2020/21 returned to Turan Galatasaray back and signed a one-year contract.

In the national team

Turan made his debut for the Turkish national football team in the friendly against Luxembourg on August 16, 2006. During the European Football Championship in 2008 , he caused a sensation when he scored a last-minute goal against Switzerland and a tie against the Czech Republic. In the semifinals against Germany he was absent due to a yellow card suspension. He scored a total of three goals, including a penalty. In the World Cup qualifier against Estonia on September 5, 2009 , Turan scored 3-2 for Turkey; this goal was the 600th goal of the Turkish national football team. Turan has since become a regular player in the national team.

Turan has been the captain of the Turkish national team since the European Championship qualifier against Luxembourg on March 31, 2015.

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in the Turkish squad . In all three games of the preliminary round he was part of the starting line-up. After the group stage, the team was eliminated.

After a verbal and physical attack on a journalist and the resulting suspension, Arda Turan resigned from the Turkish national team on June 6, 2017.

In the summer of 2017, Mircea Lucescu became the new head coach of the Turkish national team. After a personal interview, Turan returned to the national team. Lucescu nominated him for the World Cup qualifiers against Ukraine and Croatia. On October 6, 2017, he played his 100th and so far last international match in the penultimate game of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup . Due to the 3-0 home defeat against Iceland , the Turks no longer had a chance to qualify for the World Cup.
