At the draw for the six final groups on December 12, 2015, Turkey was placed in Pot 4. Turkey was drawn into group D with defending champions Spain, Croatia and the Czech Republic. Against Spain there was only one win in previous 10 games with five defeats and four draws, in qualifying for the 1954 World Cup , which resulted in a playoff that ended 2-2 and Turkey got their first World Cup participation by drawing lots . In a major tournament, the two did not previously meet. Against Croatia, the record is also negative: In six games before, there were four draws and two defeats. A draw could be used in the quarter-finals of the EM 2008 to reach the semi-finals by winning on penalties . The Czech Republic had previously opposed the Turks nine times and achieved five wins and one draw in three Turkish victories. At the European Championship preliminary round in 2008, both teams met in the last group game. Turkey turned a 2-0 deficit in the closing minutes to a 3-2 win and qualified for the quarter-finals. Both were already group opponents in the qualification, whereby the Turks won the last comparison and thus for the first time in the Czech Republic and thus paved the way to the final round.
In the first game against the Croatians, the Turks had to admit defeat 0: 1 and then also lost against the highly superior Spaniards with 0: 3. So they had to win in the last game against the Czech Republic in order to have a chance to reach the round of 16 and score as many goals as possible, as the goal difference should also be decisive. The former succeeded but the 2-0 win was not enough, as the Turks are only the fifth best group third. To get into the knockout round, they should have won 4-0.
Turkey lost only four points in the FIFA world rankings through the European Championship games and a preparatory game , but lost one place as other teams gained points.
