Jón Daði Böðvarsson (born May 25, 1992 in Selfoss ) is an Icelandic football player . His position is that of the forward, preferably on the right wing. He has been under contract with Reading FC since August 2017 .

Career

Jón Daði Böðvarsson began his professional career in the 2010/11 season in the local Pepsideild , the highest Icelandic football league, at UMF Selfoss . After a four-month loan to the U-19 team of the Danish first division club Aarhus GF 2011, the striker returned to Iceland for the now relegated UMF Selfoss and was instrumental in the promotion with seven goals. After another season in Iceland with another 7 goals, he moved to the Norwegian first division club Viking Stavanger in 2013 . There he was able to achieve 23 goals in a total of 92 league games.

On June 17, 2015, the German second division club 1. FC Kaiserslautern signed the Icelander. However, since Stavanger did not respond to the offer of an immediate change, the change did not take place until January 1, 2016. Jón Daði Böðvarsson signed a contract dated June 2018. There he came to his first appearance in the second Bundesliga in a 2-2 draw against 1. FC Union Berlin on February 5, 2016 (20th matchday). He scored his first goal for Kaiserslautern on March 4, 2016 (25th matchday) in the 1: 2 away defeat against 1. FC Nürnberg .

After just six months he left the FCK and joined the English second division team Wolverhampton Wanderers . There he received a contract until June 30, 2019. In his first game for Wolverhampton on matchday 1 of the 2016/17 season, he also scored his first goal against Rotherham United to make it 2-2. For the 2017/18 season he moved to league rivals Reading FC . There he made his debut on Matchday 1 against Queens Park Rangers and scored his first goal for Reading in the 2-0 win against Birmingham City on August 26, 2017 (Matchday 5).

National team

Jón Daði Böðvarsson made his debut on June 14, 2009 for the U-19 team Iceland in the 2-0 defeat against the Welsh U-19 national team . He made his debut for the Icelandic U-21 team on November 10, 2011 in the 5-0 loss to England . Almost exactly a year later, on November 14, 2012, Jón Daði Böðvarsson completed his first minutes for the Icelandic A-team when he came on for Matthías Vilhjálmsson in the friendly match against the Andorran national soccer team in the 80th minute . He scored his first goal for the senior national team of Iceland on September 9, 2014 in the qualifying match for the Euro 2016 in a 3-0 win against Turkey .

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was accepted into Iceland's squad. He was a regular player and played all five games in the tournament in the first eleven. In the last group game he scored the interim 1-0 in a 2-1 win against Austria on June 22, 2016, which secured Iceland the place in the round of 16. As a newcomer to the European Championship, Iceland made it to the quarter-finals, where it was eliminated by hosts France .

He was also on the Icelandic squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where Iceland was able to take part in a World Cup finals for the first time. After a draw with Argentina and defeats against Nigeria and Croatia, Iceland was eliminated as the last in Group D in the preliminary round; Jón Daði Böðvarsson was only used against Nigeria.
