The Konya Büyükşehir Stadı (also Konya Büyükşehir Stadyumu , German  Konya-Großstadt-Stadion ) is a football stadium in the Turkish city of Selçuklu in the province of Konya , Central Anatolia . The stadium is about ten kilometers north of the city of Konya . It is the home ground of Konyaspor, inaugurated in September 2014 and replaced the old Konya Ataturk Stadı from 1950. The football arena offers 41,981 covered seats in its stands.

history

The first designs for the stadium were presented in 2006; a 35,000-seat stadium with a hotel and retail stores. The new building was to be built on the site of the old Konya Ataturk Stadı, which is located in the city. This changed with a nationwide sports infrastructure program, according to which new large stadium projects are to be built outside of city centers. A new location for the construction project has been found on the northern outskirts in Selçuklu. Turkey competed for the 2016 European Football Championship and the new stadium in Konya was planned as one of the venues, but in the decisive ballot on May 28, 2010, Turkey narrowly defeated France 6: 7.

On October 17, 2012, the foundation stone for the new sporting home of Konyaspor was officially laid in the presence of, among others, Suat Kılıç , the then Minister for Youth and Sport and the former Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu . At the end of 2012, the construction company Gintaş İnşaat A.Ş. into bankruptcy and the work had to be stopped in the meantime.

The construction costing TRY 146.45 million was completed after just under two years . The stadium meets the requirements of the UEFA football association . The club colors green and white predominate on and in the stadium. The outer facade of Konya Büyükşehir Stadı consists of a steel frame on which triangular aluminum composite panels are mounted as polyhedra . The predominantly white outer skin alternates with isolated, green triangles. The roof area is covered with a translucent membrane , which allows better sunlight for the natural playing field lawn.

The double-storey circumferential grandstands are equipped with plastic seats in green (upper tier) and white (lower tier). The 55 VIP - lodges offer a total of 920 seats. There are 200 spaces available for wheelchair users . The playing field is underlaid with underfloor heating . The facilities of the sports facility also include restaurants, lounges , offices and shops. 500 parking spaces are available under the stadium. Another 3,000 are located around the stadium.

The inauguration was celebrated on September 13, 2014. Konyaspor was able to win the Süper Lig game in the opening game against Balıkesirspor (2-0) . The Romanian Gabriel Torje scored the first goal in the Konya Büyükşehir Stadı in the 29th minute. Due to the newly introduced electronic ticket Passolig with nationwide protests and boycotts, the stadium was only half full .

The stadium hosted the Turkish Super Cup game on August 13, 2016 . In the game, the champions Beşiktaş Istanbul and the cup winner Galatasaray Istanbul faced each other. After 90 minutes it was a 1-1 draw and the following extra time went goalless. The penalty shoot-out had to make the decision. While Galatasaray converted his penalties, the Beşiktaş players missed three penalties and lost 3-0.
