The Gürsel Aksel Stadyumu (also Gürsel Aksel Stadı , full name: Gürsel Aksel Spor ve Sağlıklı Yaşam Merkezi , German  sports and wellness center Gürsel Aksel ) is a football stadium in the Konak district of the Turkish city of Izmir , the third largest city in the country. It is the home ground of the Göztepe Izmir football club . The facility bears the name of Gürsel Aksel (1937–1978), a former player from Göztepe Izmir, who spent almost his entire career at the club, from youth to professionals to coaching. He died at the age of 41 in an explosion at a gas station in Rize . He was nicknamed Koca Kaptanı ( German Great Captain ) and completed a total of 390 games for the Red-Yellows from 1955 to 1972 .

history

In 1949 the old Göztepe Stadı was built. It was named after Gürsel Aksel in 1978. Around the stadium with athletics facility were u. a. several tennis courts on the east side and a few mini soccer fields on the west and south end. Due to the limited space, the sports facility could not be converted. It was demolished in 2016. In recent years, Göztepe Izmir played its home games at Alsancak Stadı and İzmir Ataturk Stadı . Construction of the stadium, designed by db Architects and the club president Mehmet Sepil, himself a civil engineer , began on September 9, 2017 . The client was Toplu Konut İdaresi Başkanlığı (TOKİ, German  State Housing Authority ). The construction was carried out by Rönesans Holding (REC Uluslararası İnşaat). The stadium area, around 350 meters from the Aegean coast , with only 34,600 (including the fan area on the south side) is tightly bounded on the north side and on the long sides in the west and east by passing streets. The stadium itself covers an area of 23,700 m². Unlike other new stadiums in Turkey, it was built in the city and not on the outskirts. The playing field was raised 6.7 meters above street level. This made it possible to create commercial space on the ground floor and an underground car park with 500 parking spaces. The TRY 218.9 million building also includes a café , restaurant , health center and gym . The stadium interior is a LED - floodlights illuminated. Through the elevation, visitors enter the grandstand, apart from the main grandstand, at the level of the first row of seats. From there the path leads up to the 26th row. A video display board is hung under the roof behind the gates . The number of seats in the west stand was reduced as the number of boxes was increased from the original 24 to 41. The plastic seats in the club colors red and yellow show the lettering 19 Göztepe 25 on the east stand . The building at the south end houses, next to the fan square, office space on the upper level. This created up to 6000 m² of public, partially roofed space. The Göztepe Izmir Association Museum is located in this area. While the offices were glazed , the stadium was given a facade made of vertical, non-reflective blinds . In this way, the residents are not disturbed by the sun's rays. The stadium construction has a special feature on its 16,600 m² roof (5250 m² of which is transparent ). Elevators and stairs lead visitors to the 650-meter-long Skywalk , which runs around the roof. It is open to everyone, except on match days. It is supposed to be an oasis of relaxation in the densely built-up city . Public greenery and even trees were planned, but for logistical and financial reasons, the strips of lawn were left in the end . The building meets the requirements of the Turkish Football Association Türkiye Futbol Federasyonu (TFF) and UEFA . At TRY 218.9 million, they stayed within budget . They also stayed within the set time frame.

The new building opened its doors for the inauguration on January 26, 2020. In the football arena, Göztepe Izmir and Beşiktaş Istanbul (2: 1) faced each other on the 19th matchday of the 2019/20 Süper Lig . Midfielder Halil Akbunar scored the first goal for the home side. The stadium has 20,040 seats. At the end of January 2020, the TFF again allowed standing room in the stadiums of the first four leagues. Göztepe Izmir wanted to set up such in the south stand, but the decision of the TFF came too late. The club wants to remove the seats and replace them with standing room. The football arena could be expanded to up to 25,000 seats.
