George S. Madi

George Shyben Madi (* 1942 or 1943 ; † August 4, 2020 in Beirut ) was a Lebanese - Gambian entrepreneur, the Gambian press dubbed him " Top Gambian business tycoon ". Madi died in 2020 in the explosion in the port of Beirut .

Life

George S. Madi, was the chairman and managing director of Shyben A Madi & Sons Ltd. (SAM). This company, of the Madi family of Lebanese origin, plays a key role in Gambia's economy by regularly supplying basic necessities and importing Japanese Nissan, Suzuki and Yamaha cars. Previously Shyben A Madi & Sons also contributed to the health sector and wrestling. The Madi family has been active in Gambia since 1890 and cultivated Gambian-Lebanese relations

In addition, Madi has been the honorary consul for Japan since 1988 . From 2001 to 2009 he was also a board member at Standard Chartered Bank (SCB).

Madi was among the victims in the 2020 explosion in the port of Beirut.

  • Rotary club member since 1981
  • 2009: In recognition of his efforts to improve relations between Gambia and Japan, he was selected by the Japanese government with the mittlereren Order of the Rising Sun in the band ( The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon excellent commander).
  • 2010: Award for his services as a board member at SCB
