The home games of Galatasaray Istanbul and concerts have been taking place in the stadium since January 15, 2011 . It replaced the significantly smaller Ali Sami Yen Stadyumu as the venue for Galatasaray, which was demolished after the sports club moved out. With 52,223 seats, the Türk Telekom Stadyumu is the second largest stadium in Turkey after the Ataturk Olympic Stadium . The German architecture firm asp Stuttgart was responsible for the architecture of the stadium . The construction costs are estimated at around 128 million euros.

After six years, Galatasaray Istanbul was entered in the land register as the owner of the Türk Telekom Stadyumu .

history

Galatasaray stadium projects

The first considerations to build a new stadium for Galatasaray come from the club president Faruk Süren in 1996 . The club's first team played its home games at the time at Ali Sami Yen Stadyumu . Due to the growing needs, Galatasaray saw the need to build a larger and more modern stadium. In cooperation with Tekfen Holding , Galatasaray prepared a stadium project for the renovation of the Ali Sami Yen Stadium . The construction costs should amount to 84 million US dollars and the stadium should have 40,882 seats, 1,500 VIP seats and 82 boxes after the renovation. In August 1997, the association received a building permit from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, which the Şişli community also approved in November 1998 . Nevertheless, the project was shut down after two years because it could not be financed.

The stadium project was discussed with Mehmet Cansun as the new club president. A committee of experts was set up for the project, which consisted of association members who were professionally active as architects. The stadium should offer space for 35,000 spectators and be realized in several construction phases. Despite the construction work, it was planned that the football games would continue to take place at Ali Sami Yen . As with the previous project, construction did not begin.

After Mehmet Cansun's one-year term in office, his successor Özhan Canaydın announced the realization of a new stadium as the club's primary non-sporting goal. Galatasaray worked on another project with Tekfen Holding. The club's management calculated the cost of the renovation work at 60 million US dollars. The property on which the Ali Sami Yen Stadium stood was no longer owned by Galatasaray, so the club needed a loan. However, the mayor of Şişli Province, Mustafa Sarıgül , submitted a proposal to Galatasaray, according to which the association would take over a 35,000 square meter plot of land and thus also be able to earn money through the congress center, hotel and cinema. The new stadium was to be built in Seyrantepe , a district of the Şişli province. The Turkish Ministry of Construction and Real Estate offered Galatasaray an exchange deal: as long as Galatasaray would only use the land for the construction of the new stadium, they would agree. On May 19, 2004, the association signed the contract for 49 years. The construction area has a size of 384,398 square meters.

Edification

Initial stage of edification

On July 19, 2007, the first tender for the design of the building complex was issued. 28 companies took part in the tender, with eight companies submitting a bid. When evaluating the offers, complications arose, which is why TOKİ canceled the tender. On August 31, 2007, the Eren Talu Architektur-Alke partnership was awarded the contract for the construction of the stadium.

The stadium model was presented to the press on May 17, 2007 and the groundbreaking ceremony took place on December 13, 2007. As the construction site was on uneven ground, the construction work for the earthworks took three months. When planning the project, it was decided at the beginning that the stadium parking lots should be built next to the stadium. However, these construction plans were discarded and the parking spaces have now been built below the stadium. Finally, at the end of 2008, work on the stadium began. At that time, a contract between TOKİ and Eren Talu Architekur-Alke Partnerschaft stipulated that 66 percent of the project had to be completed, but at the time it was 24 percent. In May 2009, Eren Talu-Alke's construction was stopped due to financial difficulties. TOKİ finally terminated the cooperation with the contractor on July 3, 2009.

Half a year before the opening

Two months later, another tender was issued for the work that was still to be done. The stadium project was taken over by Varyap-Uzunlar with a sum of 179,661,553 Turkish liras and construction work continued in November 2009. The new contractor initially solved a corrosion problem . However, the construction work took longer than expected. In April 2010, the shell was almost complete when construction of the stadium roof began, with Varyap-Uzunlar acting as the contractor. In December 2010 the construction of the stadium was nearing completion; only the layout of the lawn, the routes to the stadium and the completion of the restaurants in the box area were still outstanding.

A lockable roof was planned for the stadium design. The then board of Galatasaray and TOKİ agreed that the closable roof should be completed by the association itself within two years. However, Galatasaray did not want to waste any more time and opened the Türk Telekom Arena in January 2011. That is why the budget for the roof was invested in the upcoming work on the stadium. Since the roof was ultimately not completed after two years, the Youth and Sports Ministry sued Galatasaray.

The construction costs for the new stadium were covered by the sale of the property of the old stadium. The property was sold to the Torunlar Aşçıoğlu Kapıcıoğlu Company for 1.025 billion Turkish liras , of which 475 million Turkish liras were set aside for TOKİ. The construction costs for the stadium ultimately amounted to 128 million euros. A total of 190,000 cubic meters of concrete and 35,000 tons of iron were used on a construction area of 195,000 square meters.

opening

The football stadium opened on January 15, 2011 with a friendly between Galatasaray Istanbul and Ajax Amsterdam . The game ended 0-0. Before the game there was a light and sound show by the Canadian Erick Villeneuve and his group of 560 people. The singer Kenan Doğulu also performed at the event . Since the infrastructure around the stadium was still being built, Galatasaray decided to sell only around 40,000 tickets per game for all games this season.

Opening ceremony

The first Super Lig match in the Türk Telekom Stadyumu took place between Galatasaray Istanbul and Sivasspor on January 23, 2011 and ended 1-0. The goal was scored by Servet Çetin for Galatasaray.

capacity

The Türk Telekom Stadyumu offers seats for 52,650 spectators at soccer games, with 2,650 seats being made available for the guest fans. The stadium also has 198 boxes that can accommodate 6 to 27 people. With the boxes there are 6,231 VIP seats in the stadium. In addition to these places, a further 176 places are available for people with disabilities and their companions.

Aslantepe GSStore

On February 7, 2012, a GS store was opened next to the stadium in cooperation with the supplier Nike . The architecture of the shop was modeled on the construction of the stadium and was designed by the Galatasaray project director Coşkun Peküstün and the architect Ayşegül Uslu. The shop consists of a ground floor and an upper floor, the fan articles are on the first floor and the Ülker fan zone on the upper floor . The fan shop has an area of 1,650 m 2 and is one of the largest in Turkey.

The venue

Galatasaray plans to build a multifunctional hall called The Venue next to the Türk Telekom Stadyumu. The hall is to become the home of the women's and men's basketball team and offer space for 12,750 spectators. For concerts, the capacity should be expandable for up to 15,000 spectators. The hall project was presented at the supervisory board meeting by President Dursun Özbek on February 8, 2017.

Surname

The entire complex was named Aslantepe Ali Sami Yen Spor Kompleksi . Before the stadium name was announced, the stadium was referred to in the media as Seyrantepe , after the neighborhood in which the facility is located. In December 2007, Galatasaray confirmed that the home of the lions would be Aslantepe.

However, the main sponsor of Galatasaray, Türk Telekom , bought the naming rights for the stadium. The term is ten years and there is an option for an extension of five years. Since opening, the stadium was called Türk Telekom Arena or Ali Sami Yen Spor Kompleksi Türk Telekom Arena . It was the first stadium in Turkey to have a sponsor in its name. By resolution of the club's board of directors from May 2017, published on May 28, 2017, the stadium was renamed "Türk Telekom Stadyumu" by order of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan , in order to translate the Latin word into Turkish.

The Turkish telecommunications company Türk Telekom acquired the naming rights to the stadium for ten years in 2010 and the arena was initially given the official name Ali Sami Yen Spor Kompleksi Türk Telekom Arena . Galatasaray received $ 88 million in return . In May 2014, the term was extended by one year to 2021.

The Türk Telekom Stadyumu is divided into four areas: North (Kuzey), South (Güney), West (Batı) and East (Doğu). The division changed after Galatasaray found sponsors for the areas mentioned. Pegasus Airlines was the sponsor for the northern area from 2011 to 2013, and Odeabank since 2013 . For the eastern upper tier, Ülker was a sponsor for two years and the stand was named Ülker Aile Tribünü (Ülker family stand ) . The naming rights of the south stand were handed over to Opel for 2.5 years in 2012 . After the collaboration with Opel came to an end, MNG Kargo became the new bearer of the name at the beginning of the 2015/16 season .

In 2009 Denizbank became a sponsor for the boxes of the Türk Telekom Stadyumu. The term was three years and the boxes were called Deniz Club Locaları .

service

On August 19, 2014, the telecommunications company TTNET and Galatasaray signed a six-year contract. The spectators who have access to the press stand or are box owners can use GS TTNET WiFi free of charge . Viewers who are TTNET customers receive free WiFi minutes. Stadium visitors without a TTNET subscription can also use the WLAN, but must pay for this service beforehand by credit card.

Before the opening of the Stadyumu, Galatasaray reached an agreement with the Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG). Shortly after Ünal Aysal, a new club president and board member, was elected, the cooperation with AEG was terminated. The International Stadia Group was responsible for marketing the VIP seats and boxes. In August 2011 this cooperation was also terminated.
