Kayserispor (officially: Kayseri Spor Kulübü ; German : Kayseri Sport Klub ) is a sports club from the Turkish city of Kayseri , which currently plays in the Turkish Süper Lig . The club plays its home games together with the third division club Kayseri Erciyesspor in the Kayseri Kadir Has Stadı .
history
The team was formed on July 1, 1966. At the time, Kayseri owned a stadium, but no professional team that could represent the city in the Turkish football championship. The then President of the Turkish Football Association Orhan Sefik Apak wanted football to become an important sport in all cities in Turkey and tried to market football outside the big cities in western Turkey. For this reason he started a campaign by offering the cities, if two local clubs merged, to include this new team in the second Turkish football league. So it happened in the case of Kayseri; because the city representatives did not come to an agreement in time to take the place in the second division, the football association could only accept the new teams in a new (third) division. Thereupon the responsible persons of the clubs Erciyes Gençlik , Yeni Sanayispor , Fenergençlik and Ortaanadoluspor agreed to merge into a single club Kayserispor with the colors red-yellow. The legendary Erciyes mountain on the outskirts was chosen as the team's logo. The name Kayserispor was to stay that way until modern times, but more on that later.
Since a start in the third division was considered unworthy, the then president of the soccer association Apak was invited to Kayseri. Apak was so impressed by the presentation of the sports centers and the stadium that Kayseri was accepted into the second division. After a major relief operation in the city for the newly founded team, those responsible raised the sum of 65,000 lira at the time. First the coach Erdogan Gürhan , who previously coached the Erciyesspor team, was hired. After a few revisions to the squad and a few new transfers, the story of the city's most successful team in the Turkish second division began.
1970s and 1980s
At the end of the 1960s, Kayserispor played more in the midfield of the second division, but in the 1972/73 season the team had a sensational success and ended the season in first place in the league, even ahead of Trabzonspor , who later became Turkish champions 6 times should become the first division and is still considered one of the four big Turkish clubs to this day. After two years in the first division, the team had to return to the second division. 1978/79 the team was able to qualify again for the first division with a goal difference of 66 goals. In the same season they got with Galatasaray Istanbul an unpleasant opponent in the Turkish Cup competition , despite the difficulties they defeated Galatasaray and qualified for the first time for the semi-finals of the Cup, in which they lost to Adana Demirspor. In the same year Kayserispor built the first training center for a soccer team in Turkey before the big clubs from Istanbul. A year later, the team rose again to the second division. In the 1984/85 season, the team rose again to the first division, but in 1986 the team had to return to the second division, which brought a long-lasting crisis that brought Kayserispor to the third division in 1989/90. One of the most important reasons was that the mayor at the time was hardly interested in football and Kayserispor and the city no longer had any financial support. But after the new mayor Niyazi Bahcecioğlu was elected a year later, the team got money from the city again and was able to buy important players, and for this reason they were promoted to the second division as champions in the third division in 1991.
1990s
In the 1992/93 season even the promotion as the first in the second division succeeded with a huge point gap to the second Petrolofisi. In the following years, the club managed to establish itself halfway in the Turkish league and to prove itself first-class for four years before relegating to the second division again for the 1996/97 season. Although they managed to get back up immediately, they ultimately got down again as a climber. The club then remained in second class.
Ascent
The 2003/04 season ended sixth, but they rose because the then promoted Kayseri Erciyesspor transferred the promotion rights to Kayserispor by swapping roles with Kayserispor. You exchanged both the name and the entire team with Kayserispor, so Kayserispor rose with the Kayseri Erciyesspor squad. Erciyesspor initially stayed in the 2nd division before it rose to the Süper Lig in 2004 as the second club from Kayseri .
Establishment in the Süper-Lig
Kayserispor had not had it easy as a promoted team and had to tremble for several matchdays until they were able to just secure relegation on matchday 34 when they were fourth in the table. In the next season, however, they surprised the league and finally reached fifth place in the table and were thus able to qualify for the UI Cup . Particularly noteworthy was the performance of Gökhan Ünal , who was top scorer with 25 goals. Kayserispor was able to convince in the new season and again finished 5th in the table after the season.
At the end of the 2007/08 season, Kayserispor won the Turkish Cup on penalties against Gençlerbirliği Ankara 11:10.
On December 6, 2009, Kayserispor managed to jump to the top of the table with the 3-0 win against Bursaspor and the mistakes of the three big Istanbul clubs. So far the greatest success in the Süperlig.
descent
The 2013/14 season was very unfortunate, with many injuries. At the end of the season, the relegation could not be prevented.
European Cup balance sheet
Thanks to the strong 5th place in the table, Kayserispor made it into an international competition for the first time in the 2006/2007 season. In the second UI Cup round, the club defeated the Hungarian representative FC Sopron and reached the final. There they won 2-0 against AE Larisa from Greece and thus played in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Cup . After defeating the Albanian club SK Tirana twice, they met the Dutch runner-up AZ Alkmaar as a clear underdog in the first main round of the UEFA Cup . They lost the first leg away with 2: 3. In the second leg, Kayseri sensationally led 1-0 to Dembélé in the 54th minute and Kayserispor was eliminated. Still, many experts were impressed by the Kayseri team as they became the first Turkish team to win the UI Cup. In the season 2007 / 08 Kayserispor was not qualified for the Intertoto Cup, although they had once occupied the fifth place. Since with Kayseri Erciyesspor a team moved into the Turkish Cup final that had not qualified for the international competitions by placing in a league, the UI Cup starting place went to fourth place in the table Sivasspor . For the 2008/09 season, Kayserispor qualified as a Turkish Cup winner for the UEFA Cup.
