Mutlu Topçu (born November 19, 1970 in Bursa ) is a former Turkish football player and coach.

Player career

Topçu played for the youth department of İnegölspor for a while . Here he fell on the talent scouts of the reigning Turkish champions Beşiktaş Istanbul and was transferred to this club for the 1990/91 season. Head coach Gordon Milne carefully integrated him into the professional squad. He made his debut on September 1, 1990 in the league game against Karşıyaka SK . By the end of the season, he played eight more games for his club and also rose to the Turkish U-21 national team. With his club he finished the season as Turkish champions, which Topçu was able to win his first title. In the following season he completed another nine league games and again defended the Turkish championship with his club. In the 1992/93 season Topçu increased his competitive stakes to 20. His club, however, awarded the championship to arch-rivals Galatasaray Istanbul . This failed title defense led to Milne being controversial in the club. His team started the 1993/94 season by winning the TSYD Istanbul Cup , which was played pre-seasonally, and by winning last year's President's Cup . After Beşiktaş ended the first half of the 1993/94 season with a 10-point gap to the leaders, Milne resigned from his post and was replaced by Christoph Daum . Topçu, who was used consistently in the first half of the season by Milne, also kept his regular place under Daum. With Daum, the team ended the season in 4th place in the table and won the Turkish Cup . In the new season, Daum went through a squad revision and parted ways with some long-time players. With newly signed players and some older players, he then formed a new team. Topçu was one of the most important players on this team. With this newly formed team, Beşiktaş was able to become Turkish champions again after three years. Under Daum, Topçu played almost all of his team's competitive games and was promoted to senior national team. In the next season, however, he lost his regular place in phases and completed 14 league games by the end of the season. Although he was no longer able to be consistently set as a regular player in the following four seasons, he was one of the regularly used players. He and his team had no chance in the championship during these four years, they won the Prime Minister's Cup once, the President's Cup once and the Turkish Cup once.

Before the 2000/01 season he was put on the sales list by the new head coach Nevio Scala and moved to league rivals Adanaspor before the start of the season . At this club he played until the end of the season and ended his career in the summer of 2001 at the age of 31.

National team

In 1990, at the age of 20, he was nominated by the then U-21 national coach Fatih Terim for the squad of the Turkish U-21 national team and played seven games in two years.

On the occasion of the Mediterranean Games in 1993 he was appointed to the squad of the Olympic selection of Turkey, which was also supervised by Terim. Topçu completed two matches in this tournament and won the gold medal with his team.

In November 1994, Fatih Terim, who now coached the Turkish national team, was nominated for the first time for the squad of the Turkish national team in a qualifying match of the European Championship 1996 against the Icelandic national team and made his international debut in this encounter. By the summer of 1995 he completed eight more assignments for Turkey. However, after he was not set as a regular player in his club and the position of left full-back was occupied by Abdullah Ercan and Hakan Ünsal in the national team, Topçu was no longer considered for the national team.

Coaching career

After his career ended, Topçu decided to pursue a career as a coach and from summer 2003 worked as an assistant coach to his former teammate Ertuğrul Sağlam . He accompanied him from 2003 to 2014 in all of his coaching stations.

In the spring he was introduced by some media as the new assistant coach of the Turkish national coach Fatih Terim. However, there was no collaboration after all; Topçu remained assistant coach to Ertuğrul Sağlam.

In June 2014 he accepted the offer of the second division club Kayserispor to work for the club as head coach from the 2014/15 season. After just four matchdays, Topçu was sacked as coach of Kayserispor.

For the 2015/16 season he was hired as the new head coach at the southern Turkish first division club Gaziantepspor .

In January 2017, Topçu succeeded Hamza Hamzaoğlu at Bursaspor .
