Hamza Hamzaoğlu (born January 15, 1970 in Komotini ) is a former Turkish football player and coach.
Player career
youth
Hamzaoğlu was born to Rumelia Turks in Komotini, Greece . He later moved to Turkey with his family and settled in Izmir . Here he began with the club football in the youth of the former traditional club Izmirspor .
Izmirspor
In 1988 he was accepted as a professional player in the Izmirspor team and quickly found a place in the regular formation. In his first season, the 1988/89 season , he and his team were champions of the Türkiye 3rd Futbol Ligi and thus rose to the Türkiye 2nd Futbol Ligi . In 1991 he was nominated for the first time for the Turkish U-21 national team and from then on played here regularly. Through his assignments in the U-21, several larger clubs became aware of him.
Galatasaray
Galatasaray Istanbul acted first and tied the youngster in the summer of 1991 for two years. Here he immediately found the trust of coach Mustafa Denizli and became a regular player. In his second season he got a new coach in Karl-Heinz Feldkamp . This turned the team inside out and sorted out many seasoned professionals. Hamzaoğlu was one of the few old players Feldkamp bet on. The team, which had been playing disappointingly in recent years, immediately became champions of the Süper Lig under Feldkamp , winners of the Turkish soccer cup and winners of the Turkish soccer supercup . In the 1993/94 season he managed to defend the championship title with his team. In the 1993/94 UEFA Champions League season, the big favorites Manchester United were thrown out of the competition in the second round and qualified as the first Turkish team for the newly designed UEFA Champions League . In the 1994/95 season they reached the autumn championship of the Süper Lig with the new coach Reinhard Saftig and participated successfully in the Champions League again. With the beginning of the second half of the season, the team experienced an enormous drop in performance and moved away from the top of the table. Then Saftig was dismissed as the first coach in the club's history in the current season and the season was ended with the interim coach Müfit Erkasap .
İstanbulspor
For the 1995/96 season İstanbulspor rose to the Süper Lig . Previously, the club was bought by billionaire Cem Uzan . With İstanbulspor he wanted to create an alternative to the three big Istanbul clubs Galatasaray Istanbul , Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Beşiktaş Istanbul . National and international stars such as Oleg Salenko , Peter van Vossen , John van den Brom , Saffet Akyüz , Emre Aşık , Sergen Yalçın , Oğuz Çetin , Tanju Çolak etc. were bought without fear of costs . Hamza Hamzaoğlu was among the signed players. Leo Beenhakker is hired as a coach . The first season did not go as expected and the team finished in a disappointing 13th place despite large investments. Hamzaoğlu, however, was one of the few players who knew how to consistently convince. The next season they occupied sixth place in the table with the German coach Herbert Neumann . The 1997/98 season one increased this success and took fifth place in the table.
Siirt JetPAspor
At the end of the 1998/99 season, the club owner Cem Uzan decided to give up his İstanbulspor project due to insufficient support from the fans and released many players for sale. So Hamzaoğlu moved to the then second division Siirt JetPAspor . Here, too, Fadıl Akgündüz and his company JetPa were a financially strong patron . Besides Hamzaoğlu also such stars as they undertook Alpay Özalan , Sergen Yalçın , Ceyhun Eriş , Oktay Derelioğlu etc. end of the season they reached the runner-up of the TFF 1. Lig , and thus the direct promotion to the Süper Lig . Hamzaoğlu played one more season in the Süper Lig for the club and separated at the end of the season after the club had failed to keep relegation.
Alanyaspor & Yimpaş Yozgatspor
For the upcoming 2001/02 season he first moved to Alanyaspor and a month later to the then first division Yimpaş Yozgatspor . At Yozgatspor he played regularly for one season. After this club failed to stay up at the end of the season, Hamzaoğlu also separated from this club.
Konyaspor
For the upcoming season he agreed for a season with the second division Konyaspor . Here he played for a season as a top performer and captain and had a significant share in the championship of the TFF 1st Lig and the direct promotion to the Süper Lig . Since his contract was not renewed at the end of the season, he also had to leave this club.
Beylerbeyi SK
In the summer of 2003 he moved to the third division and then second club Galatasarays, to Beylerbeyi SK . Here he played another season. In the summer of 2004 Hamzaoğlu ended his playing career after a serious injury.
National team
Hamzaoğlu played four times for the Turkish U-21s in 1991 . In the summer he took part with the Turkish Olympic selection at the Mediterranean Games in Athens and won the silver medal. In 1993 he played in a qualifier for the 1994 World Cup against the Norwegian national team once for the Turkish national team .
Coaching career
Following his playing career, he decided to start a coaching career. His first position was in summer 2004, when he was the assistant coach of his former coach Safet Sušić at Konyaspor . He then assisted at Çaykur Rizespor first Safet Sušić and then his successors Rıza Çalımbay and Samet Aybaba .
From March 2008 he assisted Safet Sušić again for three months, this time at the first division club Ankaraspor .
In November 2009 he took over his first post as head coach and coached the second division team Malatyaspor for half a season.
He then coached the third division Eyupspor in the 2009/10 season . With this club he was able to establish himself at the top of the table for a long time and only missed promotion to the TFF 1st Lig in the last game.
Through the success with Eyüpspor, the second division Denizlispor became aware of Hamzaoğlu and signed him for the upcoming season. With this club he reached the autumn championship. In the second half of the season his club started worse and moved away from the top of the table. Hamzaoğlu then offered the club management his resignation. The club's management accepted the resignation and replaced Hamzaoğlu a little later with Serhat Güller .
Hamzaoğlu himself replaced Mehmet Atilla Özcan as coach at second division Akhisar Belediyespor in March 2011 and managed to stay in the league with the club, which had already been relegated. For the new season he built up a powerful team according to his ideas and established himself in the promotion places for the entire season. At the end of the season they surprisingly reached the championship of the TFF 1st Lig and thus direct promotion to the Süper Lig . After this success, his contract, which expired at the end of the season, was extended for another year.
After the Turkish national coach Abdullah Avcı resigned from his post at the end of August 2013, Fatih Terim agreed to look after the Turkish national team in addition to his work as head coach of Galatasaray Istanbul until the summer of 2014. After taking office, Terim Hamzaoğlu made the offer, in addition to Hamzaoğlu's activity at Akhisar Belediyespor Terim, to assist the national team as an assistant coach. Hamzaoğlu accepted the offer. Before the 33rd match day of the 2013/14 season, Hamzaoğlu said that he would not continue his coaching activity at Akhisar in the next season. After the national coach Terim had asked him to choose either the national team or Akhisar Belediyespor for the coming season, Hamzaoğlu decided to become an assistant coach in the national team and against Akhisar.
At the beginning of December 2014, he took over Galatasaray Istanbul as head coach, succeeding the dismissed Cesare Prandelli . He led his team on the 33rd matchday, the penultimate matchday of the season for the 20th championship. On November 18, 2015, Galatasaray unexpectedly announced the separation from Hamzaoğlu.
In mid-December 2015 he was hired as head coach at the first division club Bursaspor . Hamzaoğlu was released on January 21, 2017. In March 2019 he took over the relegation-threatened first division club Büyükşehir Belediye Erzurumspor .
