Fehmi Alpay Özalan (born May 29, 1973 in Izmir ) has been a member of the Turkish Grand National Assembly for the AKP and a former Turkish football player and coach since July 2018 .

Player career

Alpay Özalan was awarded a fair play prize by UEFA when he was the last man in defense to let Goran Vlaović in a game against Croatia in the 1996 European Football Championship and did not pull the emergency brake and Vlaović scored the only and victorious goal scored for Croatia. Özalan was criticized by the Turkish media, who believed that a foul and the prevention of the scoring chance would have been tactically wiser. This criticism had a lasting influence on his further personal football development. He stated that he was never happy about this award.

Özalan was elected to the eleven of the tournament at the 2002 World Cup , whereupon he asked for a raise on his return to his club Aston Villa . Therefore, he was little used in the 2002/03 season by coach Graham Taylor. Even at the beginning of the 2003/04 season, it was rarely used due to the angry reactions of the fans.

On October 11, 2003, during the qualifying game for the 2004 European Football Championship against England, there was a physical confrontation with England's star David Beckham . This led to another break with the English fans and media, after which he was fired from Aston Villa on October 23, 2003. In 2004 he moved to the Korean K-League for Incheon United . However, he only played here for six months before moving on to the J-League for the Urawa Red Diamonds , where his contract was dissolved again after six months due to disciplinary problems.

On August 1, 2005, Alpay Özalan signed a one-year contract with the Bundesliga club 1. FC Cologne . Because of multiple derailments and physical attacks (kicks and punches) on opponents, such as. B. an elbow check against the Hamburger Guy Demel , he received in December 2005 from the DFB a ban from 4 competitive games.

After a defeat in the decisive play-off match for qualifying for the 2006 World Cup against the Swiss national team , he was a triggering factor in the subsequent physical confrontation with several injured people with a kick against the Swiss Stéphane Grichting and imitated punching movements against Swiss players. For this he was banned from FIFA for six international matches .

After he physically attacked one of his teammates while training at 1. FC Köln, the club offered him professional help (psychological support). However, Özalan turned down the offer and once again promised improvement. On November 23, 2007, he was suspended from the club because he had expressed criticism of the Cologne coach Christoph Daum , with whom he had become Turkish champions in 1995 together with Beşiktaş Istanbul . He said, “This is no longer the thumb I know. He no longer has the will and the aggressiveness that I have always valued in him. "

When he hadn't found a club after a long time, he decided to end his active career.

Career as a sports director

Özalan worked as a sports director in the fourth Turkish league at Siirtspor .

Coaching career

In the summer of 2016 he was hired as the new head coach of the Turkish second division club Eskişehirspor . Özalan was released in February 2017.

For the 2017/18 season he took over another second division club, Samsunspor . Here he and his team started the season below expectations. He attracted attention through several controversies with the local press. Finally, he left this club after seven match days by mutual agreement.
