Stéphane Grichting (born March 30, 1979 in Sierre ) is a former Swiss football player .

Career

Grichting's first club was FC Chalais , for which he played from 1986 to 1993. The left-footed defender began his professional career after training as a carpenter in the top Swiss league at FC Sion , where he played from 1993 to 2002. He then moved to Ligue 1 in France for AJ Auxerre , for which he was committed for over ten years. In summer 2012 he moved to the Swiss first division club Grasshopper Club on a free transfer .

Grichting gave his debut in the Swiss national team on April 28, 2004 and was used there 44 times, including at the 2006 World Cup in Germany and the 2008 European Championship in Austria and Switzerland. On June 6, 2011 the defender resigned from the national team because he was not in the squad in the European Championship qualifier against England under coach Ottmar Hitzfeld .

Others

Grichting was hardest hit by the riots in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup after Switzerland's relegation match against Turkey in Istanbul: he was kicked in the abdomen and had to be treated for medical treatment.

After the end of his football career, he worked as an athletic trainer for skiers.
