Guy Roland Demel (born June 13, 1981 in Orsay ) is a French - Ivorian football player .

Life

youth

Guy Demel, who was born in the Paris suburb of Orsay , grew up in Saint-Antoine in the north of Marseille , a district marked by violence, drugs and no-night exit bans. He later told of his former friends who were in prison and that he had been able to get out of misery with football .

Professional career

Demel began his professional career in Ligue 2 at Olympique Nîmes . He then moved for the 2000/01 season to the English top club Arsenal , where he only played in the reserve round for a year, as he could not prevail due to the great competition.

After this one-year interlude in London , he moved to Borussia Dortmund's German Bundesliga in 2001 for 600,000 marks . As before in London, Demel could not prevail in Dortmund due to strong competition on the right side of the defense and in the center of the defense. In the 2001/02 championship season Demel was not yet used in the Bundesliga. Also in 2002/03 he played largely in the regional league team of BVB.

Only with the coach change at the beginning of the 2004/05 season Demel was able to fight for a regular place on the right side of defense under coach Bert van Marwijk . Thus, among other things, the HSV became aware of the very versatile man from the Ivory Coast as a right defender, central defender and as a "vacuum cleaner" in front of the defense (central defensive midfield). That is why Demel then moved to HSV for the 2005/06 season, where he immediately fought for a regular place and was also used in the right midfield.

On August 31, 2011, West Ham United , who had previously been relegated from the Premier League , signed Demel. He signed a two-year contract until June 30, 2013 with an option for a further year, with which he returned to England after ten years in Germany. With West Ham Demel reached third place in the 2011/12 Football League Championship and celebrated promotion to the Premier League via the play-off round. In the summer of 2015 Demel moved to Dundee United in Scotland, but with the club he was relegated from the Scottish Premiership and, after a brief period of non-membership, joined Red Star FC in the French Ligue 2 in January 2017.

National team

Guy Demel became a citizen of Ivory Coast in 2004 because his parents were from that country. Since then he has been a regular member of the Ivorian national soccer team , with which he qualified for the 2006 World Cup in Germany and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa . On February 10, 2006, Ivory Coast reached the final of the Africa Cup and only lost to the winner Egypt on penalties . Demel played in this tournament in a preliminary round game and in the semi-finals.

Private

Guy Demel has been married since spring 2007 and has two daughters. He is also the uncle of the French soccer player Jonathan Béhé .
