Altay İzmir is a Turkish football club that currently plays in the second Turkish professional league TFF 1. Lig . The official name of the club is Altay Gençlik ve Spor Kulubü ( German Altay youth and sports club) . The club is one of the founding members of the top Turkish league, the Süper Lig , in which they played a total of 41 seasons. In the all-time table of the Süper Lig , the club is in 8th place. With this placement, the club is ahead of city rivals Göztepe Izmir , Karşıyaka SK , İzmirspor , Altınordu Izmir and Bucaspor, with a clear difference, the most successful club in the city of Izmir, which was active in the highest Turkish league.

history

The first football matches in Turkey were held from 1898 between the Greek , Armenian , English and Italian minorities . Only in 1905 did the enthusiasm for football spread to the Turkish youth in İzmir. But since at that time any association of young Turkish men had been forbidden by the Sultan Abdülhamid II , there were no official associations in İzmir, as in other cities of the Ottoman Empire . It was only with the abolition of the ban on assembly in 1908 that sport, and especially football, was taught in schools and associations were promoted. During these years the activities of the Young Turkish Movement were in full swing. That is why the then member of the most important Young Turkish Party Committee for Unity and Progress ( İttihat ve Terakki Cemiyeti ), Celal Bayar , came to İzmir at the end of 1913 to get Turkish athletes excited about the Young Turkish idea. He then financed the official founding of the Altay Sport Club on January 16, 1914.

After the club had to relegate to the third highest division, the TFF 2nd Lig , for the first time in its history in the summer of 2011 , it did not succeed in returning to the second highest Turkish division, the TFF 1st Lig , in the following three years . Instead, the club found itself in an increasingly precarious situation, both financially and athletically.

After the start of the third division 2014/15 season was mixed to good and Altay always occupied a place in the top third of the table, the club slipped dangerously close towards relegation places towards the end of the first half of the season. With the start of the second half of the season, this negative trend increased further, so on the first matchday of the second round, the 18th matchday, the club only slipped into the relegation region and on matchday 27 to the 18th and last place in the table. On the 32nd matchday, two game days before the end of the season, the club also missed the theoretical possibility of relegation and was relegated to the TFF 3rd Lig for the first time in its history .

The club ended the fourth division season 2016/17 with the play-off victory of Group 1 and thus returned to the TFF 2nd Lig after three years of abstinence .
