Metin Kurt (born March 15, 1948 in Istanbul ; † August 24, 2012 there ) was a Turkish football player and coach , trade unionist and a left-wing politician .

Through his many years of work for Galatasaray Istanbul , he is very strongly associated with this club. On fan and club pages he is seen as one of the most important players in club history. During his football career he lived out his socialist sentiments openly and was therefore very popular in the left-wing scene in Turkey. He tried all his life to found an athletes' union and was therefore often called Sendikacı Metin ( Eng : trade unionist Metin ). He realized this dream at the end of 2009. Due to his position and attitude, he was often called Cizgi Metin (English: sideline Metin ) when he was a player . He was a long-time member of the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) and ran for it several times. On August 24, 2012, he died in the Istanbul district of Fatih a heart failure .

Player career

Youth and amateur teams

Kurt was born in 1948 in the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul. In order to offer their children a better perspective, his family moved from the western Turkish province of Kırklareli to Istanbul. Kurt learned to play football on the streets of Istanbul and later played on the school and district teams. His fourteen years older brother İsmail Kurt became a very well-known and popular professional footballer in the 1950s and 1960s, playing for Galatasaray Istanbul and Fenerbahçe Istanbul , among others . Motivated by his brother's career and to help his family financially, Kurt played in various amateur clubs as well as preparing for his Abitur . B. Adalet SK , soccer. His brother İsmail was also active as his consultant and manager at the time and had a decisive influence on Metin's career.

Altay İzmir

Through the mediation of his brother, those responsible for the first division Altay İzmir became aware of the young Kurt and offered him a professional contract. Kurt accepted this offer and signed his first professional contract. Since Kurt was relatively inexperienced at that time, he and Mustafa Denizli , who was also new to the team, were intensively promoted at Altay, but only slowly introduced to the professional team. The fact that Aytekin Erhanoğlu ( better known as Volkswagen-Aytekin ), who was very popular with the fans at the time, played in the position of the right winger, which was decisive for his sparse consideration in team planning . However, Kurt shows a development at Altay; so he was nominated for the first time for the Turkish U-18 national team. By the end of the season, he completed four first division matches and was able to win the Turkish Football Cup and the Turkish Supercup with his team .

PTT SK

The game for the Turkish Supercup took place in the Turkish capital Ankara and Kurt played in this game from the beginning and knew how to convince. The game was followed by his brother İsmail Kurt together with the coach of the first division club PTT and made the deal here for a change to this club. Years later, Metin Kurt noticed that he would have liked to stay with Altay, but he bowed to his brother's decision and went to the capital club PTT. Kurt played the following three seasons at this club and, thanks to the support of his coach Tamer Güney, developed into a shooting star in the league. He also made it to the Turkish national team during this time and won the ECO Cup in 1969 .

Galatasaray Istanbul

For the upcoming 1970/71 season, his older brother, himself a legend from Galatasaray Istanbul , negotiated the change of Metin Kurt with this club. Galatasaray carried out a revision in the squad and hired a new coach in addition to many new players with the Englishman Brian Birch . With the relatively young team, this formed a quick-witted squad that dominated Turkish football for the next five years. The first thing to do was to win the Turkish football championship at the end of the 1970/71 season . Metin Kurt was one of the key players Birch bet the most on. He harmonized right away with his new strike partner Gökmen Özdenak and with him was one of the most successful strikers in the league. The team won the championship again in the following two seasons, even the double in the 1972/73 season , making it the first Team to win the championship of the Süper Lig three times in a row in Turkish football history. The following years were rather disappointing for the team and Kurt. The season 1973/74 ended the team below expectations, beaten on the 5th place in the table and 1974/75 the club was runner-up with five points difference to the champion Fenerbahçe Istanbul . In the summer of 1976 they were Turkish Cup winners , but finished the league in third place in the table. After these three seasons, which were disappointing for the club's management, it was decided to carry out a revision in the squad and parted ways with some seasoned players, including Kurt. The decisive factor in this separation was also the fact that Kurt was one of the first players in professional football to openly express their socialist sentiments. During his time at Galatasaray he tried several times to found a players' union that campaigned for the rights of professional footballers. Due to these circumstances, voices in the association's board had already been raised to part with Kurt. Due to his successes, however, the voices that stood up for him were in the majority. However, like his brother İsmail , he was repeatedly excluded from the squad for a short time. Because of the unsuccessful three seasons he was released from Galatasaray.

Kayserispor

After saying goodbye to Galatasaray, Kurt was hired by the second division Kayserispor and played for this club for three seasons. At the end of the 1978/79 season he celebrated the championship of the TFF 1st Lig with Kayserispor and thus the direct promotion to the Süper Lig . After this success he ended his playing career with a farewell game.

National team

Kurt played for the Turkish national teams for the first time during his time at Altay İzmir . In a friendly game of the Turkish U-18 national team on December 6, 1966 against the U-18 from Poland , he played the full length of the game. About half a year after this encounter, he played in a friendly match against the Belgian U-18s again for the Turkish U-18s and scored a goal in this 4-0.

Just one year later, he was now working for the first division club PTT and was nominated for the Turkish national team in a friendly match . In the game played on March 13, 1968 against the Tunisian national team , he made his international debut as a substitute. In June 1969 he took part in the Balkan Cup with the Turkish U21 national team. After this tournament he was still active for the Turkish U-21 during a friendly match against Poland's U-21s.

After these missions for the U-21s, he was henceforth only active for the Turkish national team and completed a total of 26 matches for them and scored five goals. With Turkey he took part in the ECO Cup in 1965 . He completed his last international match on April 2, 1975 in the EM76 qualifier against the national soccer team of the USSR .

Coaching career

In the 1982-1983 season, Kurt coached the Istanbul club Yedikule SK .
