Erol Togay (born February 1, 1950 in Ankara , † August 9, 2012 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish football player and coach . Because of his headball strength, he was nicknamed "Kafacı Erol" (Eng. Erol the header player ).

Player career

Togay started club football in the youth of Vefa Istanbul and became a professional footballer here. For the 1973/74 season he moved to the Süper Lig to Altay İzmir . In the five years that he played for Altay, he became a national player.

In the summer of 1977 he moved to the traditional Turkish club Fenerbahçe Istanbul . Here he got a regular place straight away and kept it throughout his three years at Fenerbahçe. For the 1981/82 season he left Fenerbahçe and moved within the league to Adana Demirspor . After two seasons with the Mediterranean club, he ended his active professional football career in the summer of 1983.

National team

Togay was nominated in November 1975 as part of a qualifier for the U-23 European Football Championship in 1976 against the Soviet U-21 in the squad of the Turkish U-21 national team . In the aforementioned encounter on November 23, 1975, he made his debut for the Turkish U-21s.

About half a year after this encounter, he received his first nomination for the Turkish national soccer team in February 1976 . He was nominated by the then national coach Coşkun Özarı as part of a friendly match against the Iraqi national team for the first time for the squad of the Turkish national team , but was only on the bench in this encounter.

In the same year he received two more nominations for friendly matches for the Turkish national team, but was again on the bench. He made his debut in the Turkish national team under the new national coach Doğan Andaç on November 17, 1976 during a qualifying game for the 1978 World Cup against the GDR national soccer team . For the next four years he was an integral part of the Turkish national team.

Coaching career

After his playing career, he switched to coaching and was head coach for a short time at Konyaspor and Sakaryaspor . For the 1990/91 season he took the post of assistant coach at Fenerbahçe Istanbul and assisted Guus Hiddink . After Hiddink was fired, Togay took over the post of head coach on an interim basis and looked after the team for three matches.

In the following years he coached a large number of clubs in the Süper Lig and the lower Turkish leagues.

death

Togay contracted multiple sclerosis and died on August 9, 2012 as a result of the disease. He was buried three days later in front of many prominent guests in the Zincirlikuyu cemetery.
