Coşkun Özarı (born January 4, 1931 in Istanbul , † June 22, 2011 in Istanbul) was a Turkish football player and coach .
Player career
Coşkun Özarı started playing football at Galatasaray Istanbul when he was twelve . He was used as a central midfielder as well as a right defender. During his time at Galatasaray, he won three championships and was called up to the Turkish national football team five times . He ended his active career in 1960 at the age of just 29.
Coaching career
Then Coşkun Özarı took part in Walter Winterbottom's coaching seminars in England. After returning to Turkey he was first assistant coach of Gündüz Kılıç at Galatasaray Istanbul . He was then head coach at Galatasaray for three terms and won three championship titles during this time. Then he was appointed to the coaching office of the Turkish national team, which he exercised over various periods of time. He ended his coaching career in 1986 and has worked as a sports journalist ever since.
For a long time, Özarı held the record for most appearances as a coach for the Turkish national football team until his former player Fatih Terim overtook him. His record of 54 games as head coach amounts to 14 wins, 16 draws and 24 losses.
death
Özarı suffered a cerebral haemorrhage on June 18, 2011 and was admitted by his relatives to the Istanbul American Hospital, Nişantaşı , where he succumbed to the effects of the cerebral haemorrhage four days later. He suffered from an unspecified incurable disease and was in poor health. He was buried two days after his death after midday prayers in the Teşvikiye Mosque in the Zincirlikuyu Cemetery.
