László Székely or László Székelly (* 1910 in Budapest , Austria-Hungary , † November 27, 1969 in Robecco Pavese ) was a Hungarian football player and coach . He worked a large part of his coaching career in Turkey and is one of the most important coaches in Turkish football in general and for Fenerbahçe Istanbul in particular due to his success . With this club he was twice Istanbul football champion and once Turkish champion .
Player career
Székely was born in Budapest as the son of a Hungarian politician and diplomat . At the age of 15 he was accepted into the 1st team of Nagyváradi AC (CA Oradea) and played here for four years. He then returned to his Hungarian homeland in 1929 and began his military service here. With the outbreak of the Second World War , his military service extended until 1941. After his discharge from his military service, he began playing for MTK Budapest FC from 1945 . For this club he worked for the next five years and then ended his career in the summer of 1946.
Coaching career
Székelys started his coaching activity with the support of the Viennese sports club "MTK Wien Hakova". He then moved to Italy and worked at US Lecce as head coach. He later coached the Brazilian clubs CA Juventus and Fluminense FC . In addition, he coached a Hungarian youth national team for six games and won a tournament with them.
For the 1949/50 season Székely began to work in Italy again and looked after Hellas Verona for a season . He then took over the Israeli national team .
From the spring of 1952 he began to work in Turkey and his first job was Fenerbahçe Istanbul . In the new season Molnár with Fenerbahçe in the İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi (German: Istanbul Professional League ). At the time of his first employment with Fenerbahçe, there was no cross-national professional league in Turkey. Instead, regional leagues existed in metropolitan areas such as Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir , of which the Istanbul professional league was considered the most prestigious. In the 1952 season of this league Székely finished with Fenerbahçe the league in 3rd place in the table. Also in the new season he remained the head coach of this club. With his club Székely sat relatively early on at the top of the table and secured his team on the penultimate matchday of the 1952/53 season the Istanbul championship. After this success Székely remained coach until the start of the new season in autumn 1953, but the club's management decided to change coach for the upcoming season. After this success he demanded a higher salary from Fenerbahçe for the new season and did not receive the contract extension he had hoped for because of this demand.
After Székely of Fenerbahçe had not received a contract extension for the 1953/54 season , his agreement with the Istanbul club Emniyet SK was announced. A few days after this agreement, Galatasaray Istanbul made an offer to Székely. This accepted despite the commitment to Eminyet SK the offer from Galatasaray and replaced the former coach Gündüz Kılıç in the red-yellow . He worked here for only three months and left the club after experiencing several controversies with club officials.
After working for Galatasaray, Székely decided to continue his career in Brazil and in 1954 took over Grêmio Porto Alegre .
For the 1956/57 season Székely took over Fenerbahçe for the second time. He led the season 1956/57 for the second time to the Istanbul championship and achieved this through the better goal difference against Galatasaray.
In the first quarter of 1957, Székely was repeatedly traded by the press as the new Turkish national coach. In March, the Turkish Football Association hired him as the new head coach of the Turkish national team . Székely looked after the team until the end of the year and during this time he had two wins, one draw and one defeat in four games.
In addition to his national coaching activity, he only trained Adalet SK in the 1957/58 season . In mid-February 1958, Székely took over the club Emniyet SK, which was threatened with relegation, in the Istanbul professional league . With this club he missed relegation and was introduced as the new coach a few days after relegation at Vefa Istanbul . After he had resigned from his office in September 1958, he could be persuaded to continue training the club. At the end of November 1958 he was finally dismissed from this club. In December of the same year, he took over Beykozspor, another Istanbul sports club, but resigned from his position just a few days later.
In July 1959 he was introduced as the new head coach at the Istanbul club Karagümrük SK . From the summer of 1959, Székely and Karagümrük took part in the Millî Lig (today's Süper Lig), which was only founded in the spring of 1959 and spread across the country . This replaced all regional leagues as the highest superordinate league in Turkish professional football. The first season of the Millî Lig was played from February 1959 to June 1959. Székely looked after Karagümrük in the second first division season, the 1959/60 season . Here he missed his daughter's illness pretending to be several training sessions for his team. After the club officials found out that Székely was only showing his daughter's illness as a pretext and instead worked as a manager in a nightclub, they terminated Székely's contract in September 1959.
For the second half of the season he was hired for the third time at Fenerbahçe as head coach and thus succeeded his sacked compatriot Ignác Molnár . With his team, he finished the season behind arch rivals Beşiktaş Istanbul . Next season, Székely's Galatasaray team will be in a neck-and-neck race for the Turkish championship until the final day of the match . On the last day of the match, Fenerbahçe secured the Turkish championship with a point lead, but the poor goal difference. As a result, Székely won this title for the first and last time. He remained head coach at Fenerbahçe during the next winter break, but was replaced by Necdet Erdem in January 1962 .
After Fenerbahçe was sacked, Székely left Turkey and continued his career in Italy. Here he trained FBC Unione Venice , US Palermo , US Alessandria Calcio , FC Modena and Albenga Calcio .
death
On November 27, 1969, Székely was hit by a car while hiking between Voghera and Piacenza and died as a result of the injuries he had suffered. He left two children.
