Cihat Arman (born July 16, 1915 in Istanbul , † May 14, 1994 ibid) was a Turkish football goalkeeper , coach and official. Due to his long activity for Fenerbahçe Istanbul , he is very strongly associated with this club and seen as one of the most important goalkeepers in the club's history. He is one of five players who are named in the official Fenerbahçe march . The club also got its nickname Sarı Kanaryalar (dt. The yellow canaries ) by Arman after he played his games with a yellow jersey for years. Because of his sometimes spectacular goalkeeper parades, in which he often performed flight inserts, he was nicknamed Uçan Kaleci (dt. The flying goalkeeper ). Another nickname was Yenilmez Adam (Eng. The invincible man ). For a long time he wore the captain's armband for both Fenerbahçe and the Turkish national team for several years. With the latter he took part in the Summer Olympics in 1936 and 1948 . After his football career, he worked at Fenerbahçe and the Turkish Football Association as a club official and board member.
Player career
The first years and Gençlerbirliği Ankara
Arman attended the prestigious Galatasaray High School and during this time became interested in playing football. Due to the work of his father Faik Arman, who worked as a bank clerk at Ziraat Bankası , the family moved to Ankara . As a result, Arman could not go the usual way of the Galatasaray high school students and visit the youth department of the Galatasaray Istanbul club . He continued his school career in Ankara and began playing club football at the age of 15 in the youth department of the then popular Gençlerbirliği Ankara club. Here he was accepted into the A-team within a very short time and played with Gençlerbirliği in the Ankara Futbol Ligi (German Football League Ankara ). At the time he joined the first team, there was no international professional league in Turkey. Instead, regional leagues existed in metropolitan areas such as Istanbul , Ankara, Izmir , Adana and Trabzon , of which the İstanbul Futbol Ligi (German: Istanbul Football League ) was the most renowned, followed by the Ankara Football League . At Gençlerbirliği, the not yet of legal age Arman quickly established himself as a goalkeeper and won the Ankara championship in the 1934/35 season . After word of a talent quickly got around within the Turkish football scene, he was promoted to national player in 1936 and took part in the 1936 Summer Olympics with the Turkish national team.
Güneş Istanbul
Following the 1936 Olympics, Arman moved to the Güneş Istanbul club, which was founded only a year ago . In the mid-1935s, there was a heated controversy within the Galatasaray Istanbul team. As a result, it came in 1935 under the leadership of Ulvi Yenal and Yusuf Ziya Öniş to a separation and the establishment of Güneş SK. Among the players who left Galatasaray and joined Güneş were many of Arman's former classmates, such as B. İbrahim Tusder , Rebii Erkal , Refii Erkal and Rasih Minkari . This club immediately established itself in the İstanbul Futbol Ligi. In their first season with Arman, the club played for a long time with Fenerbahçe Istanbul for the championship. At the end of the season they were behind Fenerbahçe, but before Galatasaray Istanbul runner-up. In the next season, the 1937/38 season, the team played again with Fenerbahçe for the championship. This time, Güneş tied on points but with a better goal difference against Fenerbahçe and became Istanbul champions for the first time in the club's history. The team in this league also clearly defeated Galatasaray with 0: 7 and decided this prestigious match for themselves. In the same season, the team also took part in the Millî Küme , a type of championship in which the teams from the three cities of Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir participated. In this league, which was played in connection with the Istanbul Football League from spring to summer, Güneş prevailed against all other teams with a large point gap and also won this tournament. Arman played almost all of the competitive games for his club and played a major role in the success. Güneş also started the new season very successfully and scored eleven of the twelve possible points in the first four match days. After this 4th matchday Güneş dissolved with an unexpected and sudden decision and withdrew from the league.
Fenerbahçe Istanbul
After Güneş SK was dissolved, all players remained without a club until the end of the season. At the end of the season, some players returned to Galatasaray while others refused to return to Galatasaray. Arman moved to arch-rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul with players like İbrahim Tusder, Ömer Boncuk , Melih Kotanca , Rebii Erkal and Rasih Minkari.
At Fenerbahçe, Arman immediately conquered the goalkeeper position and kept these injury-related failures almost until the end of his career. In the first four seasons at Fenerbahçe, Arman and his team had to witness the very strong period of arch-rivals Beşiktaş Istanbul and were four times behind this club. Only in the 1939/40 season did the club win the Millî Küme and in the 1942/43 season the Maarif Mükafatı . In the 1941/42 season, Arman completed almost the entire season. In the 1943/44 season Arman's team finally managed to prevail over Beşiktaş and win the Istanbul championship again after seven years. After this championship, Arman and his team again gave the championships to Beşiktaş, but could once the İstanbul Cup , twice the Ministry of Education Cup and the Prime Minister's Cup . In the two seasons 1946/47 and 1947/48 the club won the Istanbul championship.
The next match day Arman took over as player- coach at Fenerbahçe and the post of head coach. He did not allow himself to be set up in every match and gave his substitute keepers Erdal Kocaçimen and Hüsnü Terzioğlu the opportunity to collect match practice. In February he was replaced by Englishman Peter Molloy as head coach, but was also used by Molloy as a goalkeeper. His club ended the season far behind Galatasaray and Beşiktaş as third in the table. In the new season Arman conquered a regular place again. Fenerbahçe played for a long time with the championship, but awarded this title again to Beşiktaş. However, the Ministry of Education and the Prime Minister Cup could be won. The 1950/51 season, Arman completed only two league games and lost his regular place again to Kocaçimen. After this season he ended his career.
National team
Arman began his international career during his time at Gençlerbirliği Ankara with a use for the Turkish national team in a friendly against the Yugoslav national team . After this mission he was the undisputed first national goalkeeper until the end of 1949 and during this time he also played all of his country's national games. Because of the Second World War , no international matches were played for eleven years.
With the Turkish selection, Arman took part in the 1936 1948 Summer Olympics. In addition, he took part in the Mediterranean Cup with the national team in the summer of 1949 and is second behind the second selection of the Italian national team . In total, he completed twelve A internationals and one B internationals. In nine of the twelve senior international appearances, Arman wore the captain's armband.
In 1949 he was in charge of the Turkish national team as a player- coach, instead of himself setting up his replacement Erdal Kocaçimen in goal and helping him to his only international appearance.
Coaching career
Arman was already working for Fenerbahçe and the Turkish national team as a player-coach towards the end of his goalkeeping career. In December 1952, the Turkish Football Association announced that it had hired Arman as the coach of the newly created Turkish U-18 national team.
The Turkish U-18s prepared Arman for participation in the UEFA youth tournament. Under Arman, the U-18 national team also played their first international match at this tournament. In this game, the team surprisingly prevailed 1-0 against the French U-18 national team. The Turkish U-18s finished this tournament in third place under Arman's leadership and thus achieved the best placement of a Turkish national football team to date. After this success he was traded as the coach of his old club Fenerbahçe. However, there was no agreement, so in late 1953 Arman began preparations for the participation of the U-18 national team in next year's UEFA youth tournament. He also looked after the junior team during the 1954 tournament. In the group stage of the tournament, which was held in Germany , the Turkish juniors prevailed confidently against Belgium, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg as first in the table and reached the semi-finals. In the semifinals, the team met host Germany. Against the team around striker Uwe Seeler, Arman's team lost 2-1 after a hard-fought game and had to play against Argentina in the game for third place. The team lost this game 1-0 and finished the tournament fourth. One month after the tournament ended, Arman resigned from his position as U-18 national coach.
In the summer of 1954 he took over the head coach position at the Istanbul club Beyoğluspor . He trained this club until mid-December 1954 and then resigned from his office.
A few days after his resignation from Beyoğluspor, Armen took over the Turkish U-18 national team again. Two days after it was announced that Arman would train the Turkish U-18s, he signed a contract with Beşiktaş Istanbul and looked after this club until the end of the season. Despite being hired by Beşiktaş, Arman continued to coach the Turkish U-18s and prepare them for the next UEFA youth tournament. Under Arman, Beşiktaş increased his performance towards the end of the season and played for a long time with arch rivals Galatasaray for the championship. Only on the last match day did his team miss the championship due to the poor goal difference. After this success, Arman continued his office at Beşiktaş in the next season. In October 1955, because of the double burden, he only handed over the office of U-18 national coach to his former teammate Esat Kaner and, after this hiring had not come about, to Vahap Özaltay in January 1956 . After Arman's team in the championship following the league leaders Galatasaray, he resigned in May 1956 from his office.
Immediately after leaving Beşiktaş, despite the current season, he secretly signed a contract with İstanbulspor , although Arman's old team-mate Sabri Kiraz still worked as a coach at this club . After Arman's commitment became known, Kiraz immediately resigned from his position. In early June 1956 Arman began his coaching activity at Istanbulspor and ended the season with this club in 4th place in the table. In addition to his work at Istanbulspor, Arman also took over the position of head coach of the Turkish national team from October 1956 . He looked after the national team for two international matches that were played in November 1956. After these two international matches, the Turkish Football Association tried to Arman to give up his position at Istanbulspor and henceforth only look after the national team. Arman referred to his contract with Istanbulspor, which was valid until the summer of 1958. After the two sides could not agree, Arman coached the Turkish U-18 national team in addition to Istanbulspor instead of the senior national team. In April 1957, this double burden led to Istanbulspor Arman banning participation in the UEFA youth tournament. After taking part in this tournament, Istanbulspor unilaterally dissolved his contract with Arman. After these developments, Arman took over the Turkish B national team at the end of April 1957. After about a week he was replaced by Şeref Görkey .
For the 1957/58 season Arman Kasımpaşa Istanbul began to train as head coach. He looked after this club for two years in the İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi (German Istanbul Professional League ), the successor league of the İstanbul Futbol Ligi. In the spring of 1959, the Millî Lig (today's Süper Lig), Turkey's first nationwide national league, was founded. This league replaced the regional leagues in the larger metropolitan areas, such as the Istanbul professional league, as the highest and only Turkish division. From this professional league, the first eight teams were included in this league. However, since Arman with Kasımpaşa had occupied the penultimate and thus 9th place in the table in the last season of the Istanbul professional league, the club had to continue to play in the Istanbul professional league, which from then on had the character of the second highest professional league. So Arman looked after a second division team for a year. For the second season of the Millî Lig, the 1959/60 season , the Millî Lig was increased from 16 teams to 20. Kasımpaşa was among the four new clubs, which made the club play in the top Turkish league again. Arman looked after Kasımpaşa in this league only until October 1959 and then resigned from his office. He was temporarily replaced by the team captain Recep Adanır .
In addition to his work for Kasımpaşa, the Turkish B national team and the U-18s were coached by Arman. During that time, these national teams played one or two games a year. After these games it was announced a few times that Arman would no longer be a coach, but the association hired him for the next international phase.
In July 1960 he took over the position of head coach at Istanbulspor and coached this team for a season. In January 1962, Arman became a coach at Yeşildirek SK and remained in this position until November 1962.
In August 1963 he became the coach of the Turkish U-21 national team . In October he became the coach of the Turkish amateur national team.
In August 1964 he began to work as the head coach of the Turkish national team. From January 1965 Arman remained with the national team, but from then on he worked more as an assistant coach and assisted the manager Sandro Puppo . He took care of the player nominations and the line-up. At the end of 1965 he began to look after the Turkish U-21 selection again. In addition to the U-21 selection, Arman was in charge of the amateur selection again in 1966.
In June 1966 Arman took over the first division newcomer Eskişehirspor and coached them for a season. The next season he took over a first division newcomer with Mersin İdman Yurdu . In April 1968 he resigned from his office here. For the new season, Arman took over the position of head coach at Vefa Istanbul . Milli Takim teknik direktärleri. In January 1971, Arman took over the Turkish national team for the third time in his coaching career. From this office Arman resigned in November 1971.
In February 1972, Arman began working for the national association as a talent scout.
In the late 1970s, Arman moved to Los Angeles and trained here for the amateur club Los Angeles Istanbulspor . With this club he won the league championship in the summer of 1981.
death
Arman died on May 14, 1994 in Istanbul's Şişli Etfal Hospital , where he was lying because of a recent stroke. He was buried in the Aşiyan Cemetery the next Monday, May 16, 1994, after the midday prayer . On the anniversary of his death, there is an annual memorial service at his grave.
