Beyoğluspor ( Greek Αθλητικός Σύλλογος Πέρα 'sports club Pera' ) is a Turkish sports club from Istanbul . The yellow-blacks play their home games in the Beyoğlu Stadium . Along with Kurtuluş SK, it is one of the few remaining sports clubs in the city founded by Greeks and sends teams in volleyball , basketball and football .

history

Beyoğluspor was founded in 1914 under the name Greek Football Team ; originally the association was founded in 1884 as a Greek name " Pera ", but was not officially registered. With the proclamation of the Turkish Republic in 1923 it was renamed Beyoğluspor.

The efforts of club managers and presidents such as G. Chalkousis, S. Kanakis, G. Mouzakis and A. Tripos played a crucial role in making the team successful in the premier league. On the other hand, numerous athletes also played on the international stage, such as the world champion in weightlifting and later coach of the Greek national weightlifting team, Christos Iakovou .

The majority of the fans were members of the city's Greek community . From the mid-1940s, Beyoğluspor was not only supported by Greek Istanbul residents, but also by the Turkish population who had moved to the district. Furthermore, the team consisted of more and more Turkish players from the late 1940s. The club's popularity only declined drastically after the 1955 pogrom in Istanbul . However, Beyoğluspor saw a decline in fans after Lefter Küçükandonyadis , a football player of Greek descent and one of the best players in Turkey , played for Fenerbahçe in the 1950s and 1960s - leading to most local Greeks showing their support for Fenerbahçe at times .
