Şükrü Gülesin (born September 14, 1922 in Istanbul , † July 10, 1977 there ) was a Turkish football player , coach and official. Through his many years of work for Beşiktaş Istanbul , he is very strongly associated with this club and is seen by club and fan sites as one of the most legendary players in the club's history. During his time at Beşiktaş he played with legendary players for the club such as Hakkı Yeten , Şeref Görkey , Eşref Bilgiç , Hüseyin Saygun , Hüsnü Savman , Feyzi Uman and İbrahim Tusder and was an important part of the team that formed in the years from 1933 to In 1948 he was able to win the most important title in Turkish football eight times with the Istanbul championship , five of them in a row. He is the fourth most successful goalscorer in the club's history. As a technically talented shooter, he was notorious for the direct transformation of his corner kicks into goal and was therefore also called Kornerlerin Ustası (English: the master of corner kicks ). Since he had a small belly approach towards the end of his football career, he was also called Göbekli Şükrü (English: The bulbous Şükrü ). Every year on the day of his death, Beşiktaş's club officials and supporters hold a prayer at his grave .

Gülesin was born on Kınalıada , one of Istanbul's Prince Islands . From the age of ten, his family moved their permanent residence to this island. His father Ahmet Şükrü Bey worked as a commissioner. Gülesin dealt during his youth with many sports such as swimming , light- and heavy athletics . It wasn't until he was 15 that he started playing football. A little later began with the club football in the youth department of Kınalıadaspor and played here only in the position of goalkeeper . After Gülesin continued his school career at the İstanbul Lisesi ("Gymnasium Istanbul"), he was noticed by Niko Zervudakis , a Beyoğluspor club official . This persuaded the young Gülesin to move to Beyoğluspor. At this club he suddenly played from 1939 with then well-known players Nikola Büyükvafiadis (better known as Buduri), Etyen and Bambino and continued to develop athletically. One day he played with Beyoğluspor on Kınalıada against his old club Kınalıadaspor. For this game Gülesin ran for his old club one last time and played against his current club Beyoğluspor. The game ended 5-1 for the hosts, with Gülesin playing outstandingly and scoring three goals. Immediately after this game, the then 18-year-old Gülesin, Hakkı Yeten and Fehmi Erol, spoke to two people from the reigning Istanbul champions Beşiktaş Istanbul and invited him to Beşiktaş's team training.

At Beşiktaş, Hakkı Yeten, the most important player and captain of the team at the time, dealt with the young Gülesin from the start. With Yeten as a mentor, Gülesin developed quickly. For the 1940/41 season he was included in the squad of the Beşiktaş 'football team. He came in this season in the game of İstanbul Ligi (dt. Istanbul League ) on October 13, 1940 against arch-rivals Galatasaray Istanbul to use and made his debut for Beşiktaş. Since there was no national professional league in Turkey at that time, regional leagues existed instead in metropolitan areas such as Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir , of which İstanbul Ligi (also called İstanbul Futbol Ligi) was considered the most renowned. In his second game, the home game against Vefa Istanbul , he scored two goals. In the further course of the season he completed twelve more league games and scored two goals despite his youth. His team managed to defend their title in the Istanbul championship this season. She also won the Milli Küme , a kind of championship in which the teams from the three cities of Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir participated. Gülesin completed all Milli-Küme games and scored one goal. In the following three years Gülesin's team managed to defend their title in the Istanbul championship twice. As a result, the team broke several league records. During these seasons Gülesin gradually improved and became one of the most important performers of his team. In his second season he was Beşiktaş 'most successful goalscorer with 18 goals in the Istanbul League. In the 1943/44 season, Gülesin's team missed the sixth title defense in a row and awarded the championship to arch-rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul , but could win the İstanbul Cup and the Prime Minister's Cup . Gülesin scored 27 goals in just 17 games this season, setting a new career record.

In the summer of 1944 Gülesin had to do part of his military service in Ankara . His club took this as an opportunity to loan him to the capital club MKE Ankaragücü for this season . With this club he played in the Ankara Futbol Ligi (German Football League Ankara ). Before the end of the 1944/45 season he returned to Beşiktaş and completed three competitive games by the end of the season. After this short break he played for Beşiktaş continuously for the next five seasons and was able to win the Istanbul Championship two more times, the İstanbul Cup once and the Prime Minister's Cup once.

In the 1948/49 season Gülesin's club was coached by the famous Italian coach Giuseppe Meazza . He was so convinced of Gülesin's qualities that he recommended some Italian clubs to sign Gülesin. First, Lazio tried to sign Gülesin and only let him take part in a trial training session for a while. After several weeks of trial training and two test matches for Lazio, he was able to convince those responsible of an obligation, but was loaned to the league rivals, the southern Italian club US Palermo , for the upcoming season . Gülesin was one of the first Turkish players to move abroad. In his first season he was the second best scorer of his team behind his teammate Dante Di Maso . Especially in the league game against Lazio on December 3, 1950, Gülesin scored one goal and prepared the other goal for his team's 2-1 victory. These achievements meant that he kept Lazio Rome in the squad for the next season, the 1951/52 season . This season Gülesin increased his previous year's performance to 16 league goals, was the top goalscorer of his team and one of the best of the season in general. Despite this significant increase in performance, he was for the season 1952/53 to relegation-threatened club US Palermo. At this club he played a season and was able to help ensure that the club achieved the hoped-for relegation.

In the summer of 1953 some Beşiktaş club officials tried to persuade Gülesin to return while on vacation in Istanbul. After Gülesin had agreed, Beşiktaş withdrew from the project due to the high transfer fee. Instead, the resigned Gülesin moved to arch-rival Galatasaray Istanbul. Here he played for about two years and had to end his career in 1955 after Galatasaray had previously terminated his contract. Since Galatasaray had not paid Gülesin's wages, he sued the club and only received his wages through a court order.

Years later, Hakkı Yeten , Gülesin's former teammate and mentor and 1965 Beşiktaş 'club president, organized a farewell game for Gülesin with Lazio. In this encounter, which was played on October 27, 1965 in Istanbul, Gülesin said goodbye to the football stage.

National team

Gülesin began his national team career in 1948 with a use in a friendly against the Greek national team . In this game, which his team won 3-1, Gülesin also scored his first goal in the dress of the Turkish A-selection with his goal to make it 3-1. By the fall of 1951, he completed ten more games and scored three more goals. Since a large part of his active football playing career had fallen into the time of the Second World War , no international matches were played for eleven years and so Gülesin could not begin his national team career until 1948.

With the Turkish selection, Gülesin took part in the 1948 Summer Olympics. In addition, he took part in the Mediterranean Cup with the national team in the summer of 1949 and is second behind the B selection of the Italian national team .

Trainer and functionary career

Gülesin was traded as the potential head coach of Beşiktaş Istanbul in 1955 and 1956 . After these rumors had not come true, he took over the Istanbul club Emniyet SK , the local police's football club , as head coach in November 1956 . He then looked after this club for about a year. In April 1958 he was introduced to Beşiktaş Istanbul as the new manager. After about a month, however, he resigned from his position.

At the end of the 1950s Gülesin relocated to Rome . Here he ran a Turkish restaurant and was also a correspondent for the daily Milliyet .

In November 1964 Gülesin was introduced to the second division Karşıyaka SK as the new head coach. He coached this club until April 1965 and then took over the city rivals and first division club Izmirspor . With the relegation-threatened team, he secured relegation at the end of the season. Despite this success, he did not continue his activity. He stayed in Izmir and worked there again for the daily Milliyet. In 1965 he moved back to Istanbul and worked there for Milliyet as a sports journalist.

After he had worked exclusively as a sports journalist until the summer of 1967, he took over the second division Adanaspor for the 1967/68 season parallel to his journalistic activities . But he left this club before the next winter break. In March 1968 he then took over the Istanbul first division club Feriköy SK . With the relegation-threatened club he ended the season bottom of the table and missed relegation.

In December 1968 Gülesin was appointed Turkish national coach for the upcoming test match against the Saudi Arabian national team on January 17, 1969 . After this meeting he was released from his office.

From 1969 he began to work at Beşiktaş as a club official.

death

Gülesin, who quickly became overweight after the end of his football playing career, died on July 10, 1977 of the consequences of a heart attack in Istanbul . He was buried two days later after the midday prayer in Istanbul's Teşvikiye Mosque in the Emirgan Cemetery.
