Player career

Beşiktaş Istanbul

Saygun was born in Istanbul's Beyazıt district and started playing club football in the youth of the amateur club Kadırga SK . He then moved to the amateur club Kurtuluş Istanbul and played here at the men's level.

In the summer of 1935 he moved to the traditional Beşiktaş Istanbul club . At the time of his move to this club, there was no national professional league in Turkey. Instead, regional leagues existed in metropolitan areas such as Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir , of which the İstanbul Futbol Ligi (German: Istanbul Football League ) was considered the most renowned. Saygun made his debut for Beşiktaş during the game in the Istanbul Football League on May 31, 1936 against İstanbulspor . In this game, Saygun played the entire length of the game and completed another league game this season. In the next two seasons he completed three missions per season in this league. In the 1938/39 season he was able to win the championship of the Istanbul Football League with his team, which Saygun was able to get his first title at club level. In the same season he and his team took part in the Millî Küme , a kind of championship in which the teams from the three cities of Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir participated. In this league, which was played in connection with the Istanbul Football League from spring to summer, Saygun conquered a regular place and played almost all of his team's games. With this tournament Saygun finally made his breakthrough at Beşiktaş and was one of the most important players on his team until the end of his career. In the following four years, Saygun and his team managed to defend their title in the Istanbul championship four times. In addition, the Millî Küme was won in the 1940/41 season. Saygun played in various playing positions during these four seasons. In the 1941/42 season he even played in the storm and formed the most successful storm in the league with Şükrü Gülesin , Şeref Görkey and Hakkı Yeten . He himself was also the third most successful goalscorer of his team with 14 league goals.

In the 1944/45 season, Saygun failed to defend the title in the Istanbul Championship with Beşiktaş, but was able to win the Maarif Mükafatı , the İstanbul Cup and the Prime Minister's Cup this season. The next two seasons Saygun and his team were again Istanbul champions and won the Istanbul Cup for the second time in the 1945/46 season.

Vefa Istanbul

In the summer of 1946, Saygun surprisingly moved within the league to Vefa Istanbul - the club that was founded by the renowned Vefa high school . At this association, the former education minister and writer Hasan Ali Yücel , himself a graduate of the Vefa-Gymnasium, was elected president and tried to help the association to its first championship as a patron . He was responsible for the acquisition of some stars, including the change from Saygun. At his new club, Saygun immediately established himself as a top performer and played all of his team's competitive games in his first season for Vefa. In the championship, Vefa played for a long time with Fenerbahçe Istanbul for the lead and ended the season 1946/47 finally on points with Fenerbahçe and due to the poorer goal difference because of the 2nd place in the table. In his second season for Vefa Saygun quickly lost with his team to the top of the table and finished the league in 4th place in the table.

At the end of December 1958, the Italian head coach Leandro Remondini took over the 1st team Beşiktaş 'and looked after them until the end of the season.

From the spring of 1959, Saygun and the team took part in the newly founded and nationwide Millî Lig (today's Süper Lig). This league replaced the regional leagues in the larger metropolitan areas, such as B. the Istanbul professional league , as the highest Turkish league. In the first season of the Millî Lig , the championship was played in two rounds. In the first round, the league system was divided into two separate groups. In the second round, the two group winners decided the championship among themselves in a final with a return leg. Saygun took part with his team in the group red in the competition and finished the group stage behind Fenerbahçe in second place. So the team missed the opportunity to become the first champions of the Millî Lig. After the group stage, Saygun was replaced by András Kuttik .
