Hasan Ali Yücel (born December 17, 1897 in Istanbul ; † February 26, 1961 there ) was a Turkish politician , author and literary translator . From 1938 to 1946 he was teacher and lecturer for philosophy and literature as well as education minister of Turkey . In this function he founded the village institute and carried out further educational reforms.

Life

Yücel came from a wealthy family. He was the only child of Ali Rıza Bey and mother Neyyire Hanım. The family later got into financial hardship, so that valuables had to be sold. At the age of four, Yücel started school in Lale. Two years later the family moved to Gümüşsuyu. In 1906 he attended the Mekteb-i Osmanî school, which he finished in 1911 with good grades. Then he attended the Vefa İdadisi, which corresponds to today's high school. In 1913 he had to interrupt his school education and was drafted into the military because of the First World War . There he passed through the ranks of sub-lieutenant and lieutenant. He was released in late 1918. He first studied law at the Darülfünun , but later switched to literary studies. During the Turkish War of Independence, Yücel worked alongside his studies as a journalist for the Akşam newspaper . After completing his studies, he married Refika Hanım and from the end of 1922 taught Turkish and literature at the teachers' school in Izmir. A short time later, the couple returned to Istanbul. Yücel worked there as a literature teacher at the military high school in Kuleli and later as a philosophy teacher at a boys' high school. In 1926 he became the father of twins. One of the two was Can Yücel . Another child was born in 1936.

In 1927 he became a regional inspector for the newly created Ministry of Education. He was promoted several times and traveled to Paris and London on behalf of the Ministry in 1930. Later he went on a three-month inspection tour of Turkey at the side of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk , whom he had already met in Izmir. In the 1930s, Yücel also published three books on Goethe ( Goethe: Bir Dehanın Romanı ), Mevlana ( Mevlana 'nın Rubaileri ) and on Turkish literature ( Türk Edebiyatı'na Toplu Bakış ).

From 1932 Yücel worked as director of the Ankara Gazi Eğitim Enstitüsü , an educational institute in Ankara. In 1934 he switched to politics and became a member of parliament for Izmir. In late 1938 he was appointed Minister of Education under Celal Bayar . On April 17, 1940, the law on the formation of village institutes was passed under his leadership. In August 1946 he resigned as Minister of Education and returned to journalism. On February 26, 1961, he died of a heart attack. He was buried in the Cebeci Municipal Cemetery in Ankara.

In 1997, UNESCO proclaimed the "Hasan-Âli-Yücel" year to mark its centenary .
