Akşam ( The Evening ) is a Turkish daily newspaper with editorial offices in Istanbul . It has been published since 1918, with an interruption between 1982 and 1994. Akşam belongs to the entrepreneur Ethem Sancak and is now one of the media that openly supports President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the Justice and Recovery Party (AKP).

Origin and development (1918–1982)

Together with the regional newspaper Yeni Asır published in Izmir and Cumhuriyet , Akşam is one of the oldest daily newspapers in Turkey. However, this story is marked by multiple changes in ownership and political orientation and interrupted by twelve years in which the newspaper did not appear.

The newspaper was founded by Necmettin Sadak and a few companions to support the still young Turkish independence movement. In her first years she appeared in the evening, from which her name was derived. Akşam was the first newspaper printed in Istanbul to be delivered to all of Anatolia.

Some time after the founding of the republic , publisher and editor-in-chief Sadak was elected to the Turkish parliament , to which he belonged until 1950. He was also Foreign Minister from 1947 to 1950. Nevertheless, he remained the owner of the newspaper. In the late thirties and early forties, Sadak belonged to the faction within the then state party CHP that sympathized with Nazi Germany , which was also reflected in the orientation of the newspaper. However, the communist Nâzım Hikmet was still writing for the paper under the pseudonym "Orhan Selim" in the mid-1930s .

After the death of its founder, the newspaper was bought in 1957 by Malik Yolaç, who was also elected to parliament for the CHP in the 1960s. Under the influence of authors such as Çetin Altan and İlhami Soysal, and in parallel with the development of the CHP, the newspaper moved to the left in the 1960s and temporarily developed into an influential organ of the opposition.

Together with the conservative daily Tercüman , Akşam was the first Turkish newspaper to be sold in Germany at the end of the 1960s. The attempt to publish a separate Germany edition for Turkish guest workers was discontinued after a short time.

The newspaper, which got into economic crisis, was sold to the trade union umbrella organization Türk-İş in 1971 . Thereafter, ownership and orientation changed several times without the sheet being able to tie in with its earlier importance. Eventually the newspaper was sold to the Ilıcak (Tercüman) family of publishers , who ceased to appear with the January 8, 1982 issue.

Re-establishment (1994 until today)

On September 14, 1994 Akşam returned to the Turkish newspaper market. The editor was Mehmet Ali Ilıcak, son of Tercüman founder Kemal Ilıcak. The newspaper now had a conservative-nationalist tendency.

In 1997 Akşam, like all other media in the Ilıcak Group, was sold to the entrepreneur Mehmet Emin Karamehmet and his Çukurova Holding . After Karamehmet ran into financial difficulties and the authorities accused Karamehmet of fraud, the media division was transferred to the state trust company TMSF in May 2013 in order to settle the group's debts.

In June 2013 the journalist Mehmet Ocaktan, from 2007 to 2011 MP of the AKP, was appointed as the new editor-in-chief. In November of the same year, entrepreneur Ethem Sancak Akşam, together with the newspaper Güneş and the television station Skyturk 360, bought the trust for 62 million US dollars. The media in Sancak's possession, which also include the newspaper Star and the broadcaster 24 , were brought together under the umbrella of Türkmedya (from 2016: Esmedya ). In February 2015 Murat Kelkitlioğlu , previously editor-in-chief of Güneş , was appointed as the new editor-in-chief.

Akşam's motto in the title header has remained unchanged since its re-establishment in 1994: “The newspaper of Turkey”.

Attacks against Germany

In the recent past Akşam has been mentioned repeatedly in the German media for attacks against Germany. After the bomb attack in Istanbul on March 19, 2016 , the newspaper headlined "German-style terror". After the resolution of the German Bundestag on the genocide of the Armenians , the newspaper headlined in German and in capital letters "Dummkopf" And as the Federal Constitutional Court broadcast a speech live of the Turkish President Erdoğan from a demonstration in Cologne, Akşam printed a photo montage on the front page of Chancellor Angela Merkel with a Hitler mustache and a Nazi salute. Above it was the headline "Heil Merkel!"
