Güneş ( German  sun ) is a Turkish tabloid based in Istanbul . Since it was taken over by the Esmedya group of entrepreneur Ethem Sancak, it has openly supported President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the Justice and Recovery Party (AKP). The newspaper's motto is Halkın Cesur Gazetesi ( The Courageous Newspaper of the People ).

history

Founded Güneş Ömer and Ahmet Çavuşoğlu Kozanoglu; the first edition appeared on February 19, 1982. The newspaper was later bought by Asil Nadir. On March 6, 1992, the publication was discontinued for economic reasons.

Çukurova era (1994-2013)

The newspaper appeared again on February 4, 1997, now published by the entrepreneur Mehmet Emin Karamehmet and his Çukurova Holding . Under Murat Büyükçelebi, who took over the editor-in-chief, the paper took on a secular- Kemalist orientation. One of the formative authors was the prominent Alevi author Riza Zelyut. After the AKP to the 2002 government had come, the tide took an oppositional stance.

When the Çukurova Group got into financial difficulties and the authorities accused its boss Karamehmet of fraud, the media division was transferred to the state trust company TMSF in May 2013 in order to settle the group's debts.

Sancak era (since 2013)

In November 2013, the trust company Güneş, together with the Akşam newspaper and the Skyturk television station, sold 360 for 62 million US dollars to the entrepreneur Ethem Sancak, who is considered a confidante of President Erdoğan. The media in Sancak's possession, which also include the newspaper Star and the broadcaster 24 , were brought together under the umbrella of Türkmedya (from 2016: Esmedya ).

Soon afterwards, on the occasion of the corruption investigation in December 2013 , tensions arose between the new management and the long-time editor-in-chief Murat Büyükçelebi about the direction of the paper. In March 2014, this was finally canceled. The occasion was the funeral of Berkin Elvan , a 15-year-old who was injured by a police tear gas bullet in connection with the Gezi protests and who died in a coma after nine months. The new corporate management found the reporting too critical of the government. The new editor-in-chief was Murat Kelkitlioğlu , long-time author of the AKP-affiliated daily Yeni Şafak .

In February 2015, he moved within the Esmedya group to the post of editor-in-chief of Akşam , whose author Turgay Güler was in turn his successor at Güneş .
