Habertürk (literally: Turkish News ) is a daily newspaper based in Istanbul . Currently (as of January 2017) it ranks fifth on the list of Turkish newspapers with the highest circulation . The newspaper's motto printed on the title head is Gücü Özgürlüğünde (for example: Your strength lies in your freedom ).

The newspaper is considered to be closely related to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the Justice and Recovery Party (AKP) , although it does not appear as openly as an AKP supporter as the newspapers and broadcasters of the Esmedya or Çalık media groups . Eurotopics classifies the paper as "conservative".

Ownership

The newspaper, like the television stations Habertürk TV , Show TV and (as a cooperation) Bloomberg Habertürk and the radio station Habertürk Radyo, belong to the Ciner Yayın Holding . This media group is in turn part of the Ciner Group , which was founded in 1978 and , in addition to the media industry, is active in the fields of energy , mining , chemicals and shipping . The CEO and publisher of Habertürk is the entrepreneur Turgay Ciner , one of the richest men in Turkey.

history

In 2001 the journalist Ufuk Güldemir (1956–2007) founded the news channel Habertürk TV and the website haberturk.com, one of the first news portals in Turkey. The attempt to establish a daily newspaper of the same name was given up after a short time in 2002/03.

In 2007 the Ciner media group bought the news portal and the television station. In February 2009, the Habertürk newspaper came out with a highly regarded advertising campaign full of references to established newspapers such as Hürriyet , Milliyet , Cumhuriyet and Sabah . The editor-in-chief was the well-known long-time Hürriyet author Fatih Altaylı . In March he resigned from this post, but stayed with the paper as an author. Selçuk Tepeli took his place . The website remained independent even after the newspaper was founded; The editor-in-chief is now Gülin Çelikler.

Habertürk was the first Turkish daily newspaper to appear with several newspaper books divided into sections , including regional pages for Istanbul , Ankara and Izmir . Habertürk promised to become a quality newspaper and at the same time to allow internal pluralism . Actually enrolled temporarily prominent journalists such as the left-liberal ECE TEMELKURAN , the Kemalist Bekir Coşkun and the conservative - Islamic Fehmi Koru same time for the sheet.

But in the course of time Habertürk parted with almost all columnists who were known to be critics of the AKP government or who had fallen out with it, such as Elif Şafak , Ece Temelkuran, Bekir Coşkun and Amberin Zaman . In the case of Coşkun, CEO Turgay Ciner admitted that he personally initiated the separation, but denied that, as Coşkun claims, there had been government interference.

Government influence

On June 7, 2013, at the height of the Gezi protests , Habertürk was - alongside Sabah , Zaman , Güneş , Star , Türkiye and Yeni Şafak  - one of seven daily newspapers that carried the identical headline, a statement by then Prime Minister Erdoğan about the protests , appeared. Critics saw this as a sign of direct government influence.

In the course of the 2013/14 corruption scandal , an illegally recorded telephone conversation between the then Prime Minister Erdoğan and the deputy chairman of the Ciner-Holding Fatih Saraç became known. The conversation was recorded during the Gezi protests in June 2013. In the recording you could hear Erdoğan complaining that the Habertürk TV news treadmill reported in detail about a statement by opposition politician Devlet Bahçeli (MHP) on the subject. The relevant message was removed immediately after the conversation. According to Tagesspiegel journalist Thomas Seibert, Erdoğan treated the media manager like a “subordinate”. Asked about it at a press conference by Zaman journalist Ahmet Dönmez, Erdoğan admitted the call and justified himself by stating that he had to take action against "insults".

Editor-in-chief Altaylı admitted direct government influence: "Every day orders rain down from somewhere," he told CNN-Türk . The group fired three newspaper editors because of a headline that the Ministry of Health did not like.

In another recording that became known, Erdoğan complained to Saraç in March 2013 about a revealing photo of actress Yolanthe Sneijder-Cabau on the front page of Habertürk .
