Devlet Bahçeli (born January 1, 1948 in Osmaniye ) is a right-wing extremist Turkish politician . He is chairman of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).

Personal and training

Devlet Bahçeli was born in Osmaniye in 1948, where he also attended elementary school. He attended secondary school in Istanbul , his university education took place at the Economics Academy in Ankara . He received his PhD from Gazi University in Ankara. During his studies he was a member of various “idealist associations” of the nationalist and right-wing extremist “ gray wolves ”.

Bahçeli is not married and has no children.

politics

In 1987 he became a member of the board of the "Party of Nationalist Labor" ( MÇP ) , the successor party and later renamed MHP. In 1997 he took over the party chairmanship after the death of the party founder Alparslan Türkeş . From 1999 to 2002 he was Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey in several coalition governments with the Democratic Left Party and the Motherland Party .

Because of chronic unsuccessfulness, party members of the MHP wanted to overthrow 68-year-old Bahçeli in summer 2016. The successor Meral Akşener was available , who could have made the MHP an alternative for AKP voters. The Turkish judiciary prevented new elections in the MHP through the deselection of Bahçeli. Compromising material against the revolutionaries was gathered. In September 2017, Meral Aksener was excluded from the MHP. As a result, the latter founded the Good Party (İYİ).

In March 2018 he was elected chairman of the MHP for the ninth time.

On April 17, 2018, Bahçeli called for early elections. The government then said they could discuss it and called new elections on April 18 for June 24, 2018. On April 20, Parliament voted to hold elections on June 24, 2018.

worldview

The basis and starting point of Devlet Bahçeli's thought is nationalism . Central terms are national unity ( birlik ) and integrity ( bütünlük ). Bahçeli's rhetoric is directed against everyone who is perceived as a danger to national values: the political opponents, the government, the EU and above all the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). However, often unspecified power centers ( güç odakları ) are also attacked, which damage Turkey from inside and outside and want to degrade it to a satellite state.
