He was also a presidential candidate for the right-wing Nationalist Movement (MHP) party in the 2007 presidential elections, but lost to the AKP candidate, Abdullah Gül . Between 1999 and 2002 and from 2007 to 2011 he was a member of parliament for Kayseri in the Turkish National Assembly .

Life

Sabahattin Çakmakoğlu was born in İncesu in 1930 as the son of Mehmet Kemal and his wife Bedriye. There he also attended elementary and secondary schools and completed his schooling in 1949 at Kayseri Lisesi. He then studied political science at Ankara University until 1953 . He then worked as a civil servant in the administration and also graduated from Ankara University with a degree in law. From November 1954 to May 1956 he did his military service.

Civil servant and governor career

Çakmakoğlu was then chief officer ( Kaymakam ) of İlçe (County) Kozaklı , Gülşehir and Ürgüp in Nevşehir Province , in Çıldır ( Ardahan Province ), Bayburt in Gümüşhane Province and Ereğli in Konya Province for 12 years . In 1989 İlçe Bayburt became a province.

Çakmakoğlu was Governor ( Vali ) of Ankara Province for three years and was then Governor of Gümüşhane from 1972 to 1975. From 1975 he was governor of the province of Isparta , from February to August 1978 he was governor of Edirne and 1979/80 governor of Gaziantep . From 1984 to 1988 he worked as governor of Mersin .

From 1988 to 1992 Çakmakoğlu worked at the Directorate General for Security , as Undersecretary of State for the Prime Minister of Turkey and as Undersecretary of State for the Interior Minister. In 1991 he was elected to the University Council. After his retirement in 1992, he became an advisor to the Turkish President Turgut Özal .

Interior minister

At the time, the Turkish constitution stipulated that ministers with a party membership had to relinquish their office to the responsible undersecretaries before parliamentary elections. On August 30, 1991, Çakmakoğlu took over the office of Interior Minister Mustafa Kalemli before the parliamentary elections in October 1991 . He remained in office until the new coalition of the Right Path Party and the Social Democratic Populist Party was formed and İsmet Sezgin became the new Interior Minister.

Member of Parliament and Minister of Defense

Çakmakoğlu joined the Motherland Party (ANAP) in July 1993 , but switched to the nationalist Milliyetçi Hareket Partisi (MHP) three years later. He was an advisor to the party chairman Alparslan Türkeş until his death in 1997. On November 23, 1997, Çakmakoğlu was elected to the party council of the MHP and became vice chairman of the party. In the 1999 parliamentary elections , he was elected to the Grand National Assembly for Kayseri.

The MHP was the second strongest force in the elections and formed a coalition with the Democratic Left Party and the ANAP. Çakmakoğlu became Minister of National Defense and remained in office until November 18, 2002. In the parliamentary elections in 2002 he lost his mandate because the MHP did not make it through the threshold of 10 percent applicable in Turkey and was therefore no longer represented in the National Assembly.

In the parliamentary elections in 2007 , the MHP was able to move back into parliament with 14.3 percent and Çakmakoğlu was again a member of parliament for Kayseri. Shortly afterwards, he would become vice chairman of his party again. The new elections had to be brought forward because the 11th presidential election failed because of the minimum quorum and no successor to President Ahmet Necdet Sezer could be elected. After the parliamentary election, which was successful for the MHP, Çakmakoğlu was put up for his party as a presidential candidate. He won 70 votes in the first round, 71 votes in the second round and again 70 votes in the last round and lost to the AKP candidate Abdullah Gül.

Çakmakoğlu resigned from parliament before the 2011 parliamentary elections .

Private life

Çakmakoğlu is married and has two children. A secondary school is named after him in his hometown İncesu: Vali Sabahattin Çakmakoğlu Ortaokulu (Governor Sabahattin Çakmakoğlu School). In the province of Mersin , where Çakmakoğlu was governor between 1984 and 1988, a primary school bears his name.
