Urgup

Ürgüp ( Greek Προκόπιο Prokopio ) is a small Turkish town and capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the Central Anatolian province of Nevşehir .

geography

location

The city of Ürgüp is located on a country road that connects the provincial capital Nevşehir, about 20 kilometers to the east, and the city of Aksaray and the city of Kayseri, about 60 kilometers to the west . The Turkish capital Ankara is 260 kilometers to the northwest. The tourist places around Antalya , Side and Alanya are about 400–500 kilometers to the southwest.

At an altitude of about 1150 meters above sea level, Ürgüp is centrally located in the tourist region of Cappadocia . There are numerous attractions near the city such as B. the fairy chimneys washed out of the volcanic rock and other impressive geological formations as well as the early Christian cave churches in the open-air museum of Göreme .

The city lies on the D302 motorway, a 28 km long branch line from Nevşehir. According to the city seal, the place was raised to a municipality (Belediye) in 1886.

Landscape image

The village is based on a flat, large and slightly inclined rock plateau. The older buildings mainly consist of pink and beige colored boulders, the so-called tuff . With their flat roofs, the buildings blend in with the rectangular monoliths that erosion has separated from the sloping sides of the plateau over time.

In the surrounding areas between Ürgüp and Nevşehir, pink-colored gorges, where tuff rock is still extracted from quarries, and the so-called “fairy chimneys” characterize the landscape. These different colored tuff cones, which were created a few centuries ago, are protected at the top by a hardened stone slab. The soft, eroding rock, which broke off a single fold of the rock due to geological movements, enabled the weather to act between the rock blocks and the resulting formation of the cones.

district

The county in the west of the province is bordered by Avanos County in the north , Central County ( Merkez ) in the west and Derinkuyu County in the south-west . In the east and south, the Kayseri province forms the border with the Incesu and Yeşilhisar districts . It is the second most populous district after the central administrative district and has a higher population density (60.2) than the provincial value (of 54.4 inhabitants per km²).

In addition to the district town (2018: 62.9% of the district population), Ortahisar (3,150 inhabitants) is another municipality ( Belediye ). In addition, 23 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 433 residents belong to the district. Three villages have over a thousand inhabitants: Mustafapaşa (1,301), Mazı (1,167) and Başdere (1,046 inhabitants), nine villages have more than 433 inhabitants.

tourism

Today, Urgup is visited by numerous tourists who come from the resorts on the Turkish Riviera . In the vicinity of the older part of the village, where houses are distributed in the plain below, there is a larger holiday resort with numerous more modern buildings. These are based on the traditional construction and architecture that is characteristic of this region.

A few kilometers outside of Ürgüp there is a large number of churches and chapels in an extensive area, including the older buildings in the "Balkan Valley" from the 6th century. The monastery of Basmelek ("the Archangel") is located near the town of Cernil . In Ayvalik there are the churches Karacalıı Kilise and Yukarı Kilise ; in the more distant Tagar is the church of St. Theodore , a saint venerated in this region. This partially collapsed church is one of the largest Christian structures in the Ürgüp area.

The nearby "Golgoli Valley" today houses only a few of the ancient churches with their interiors decorated with paintings and frescoes. The "Taskımpacha" near Damsa, a mosque from the 16th century, consists of a three-aisled room with a rectangular floor plan. This is covered by a barrel vault and a dome. In addition to the paintings, the portals and the wooden altar in the nave are also important. This building complex also includes a minaret and an inner courtyard.
