Avanos ( Greek Άβανος ( f. Sg. )) Is a small town and capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the central Anatolian province of Nevşehir .
geography
The city is located in the east of Nevşehir Province at an altitude of around 920 meters. Avanos is located about 15 kilometers by road northeast of the provincial capital on the Kızılırmak , the longest river in Turkey. The D300 trunk road, which runs in an east-west direction, connects Avanos with the provincial capital Nevşehir.
The district is divided into the district town and three further municipalities ( Belediye ) Kalaba (4,438), Özkonak (3,482) and Çalış (1,923 inhabitants) as well as 16 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 581 inhabitants. Four of the villages have over a thousand inhabitants: Mahmat (1,225), Topaklı (1,207), Akarca (1,184) and Göynük (1,140 inhabitants), eight of the villages have over 581 inhabitants.
Attractions
In the district of Avanos are the places Özkonak with an underground city and Çavuşin , which has some rock churches . About six kilometers east of the city is the Seljuk caravanserai Sarıhan .
history
The history of the city probably goes back to Hittite times.
Economy and tourism
Avanos is known for its numerous traditional pottery and brickworks . The inhabitants live primarily from tourism . In the city there are large hotels, local potters' shops , guest houses, carpet dealers, bars and restaurants, as well as animation companies for three-day tourism.
Agricultural products are mainly grain, sugar beet, fruit and wine.
