Özkonak is a municipality in the Turkish province of Nevşehir . The village is located in the district of Avanos around 15 km northwest of the county seat and 30 km northeast of the provincial capital Nevşehir . The place is known for its cave city. The former name of Özkonak was Genezin.

history

Underground city

On the outskirts of the elongated village is a small cave town that was discovered in 1972. The underground system leads up to ten floors, of which only five are accessible for tourism.

The underground city is equipped with a ventilation system, living rooms and storage rooms as well as water depots. Communication took place via a system of small holes between the individual apartments. There are simple graves in a hill above the underground city. In the living area there are bedrooms, dining rooms, wine cellars, toilets, kitchens, storerooms and stables.
