history
The city was called Muskara under the Ottomans and was the birthplace of the Grand Vizier and son-in-law of Sultan Ahmet III. , Damat Ibrahim Pasha (1660-1730). The Grand Vizier turned his full attention to his native town and had mosques, fountains, madrasas , baths, caravanserais , schools and souvenirs built in the originally eighteen-house village of Muskara, and finally named the place Nevşehir ( Persian نوشهر Nou-Schahr , 'new city') around. A special attraction is the Ibrahim Pascha Mosque (also Kursunlu Camii ), built by Sarkis Kalfa in1724.
In 2013, during demolition work as part of structural restructuring measures, an approximately 5,000 year old underground city was discovered. With an area of an estimated 45 hectares and up to 20,000 inhabitants, it would be the largest city of its kind discovered to date. In December 2014, the area was designated as an archaeological protection zone.
In November 2000 an official friendship agreement between Nevşehir and Pforzheim and on December 6, 2007 the city partnership agreement was concluded.
