The Çalık family entered the textile business around 1930. In 1980 the family founded the Ortadoğu Tekstil Tic. ve San A.Ş. . Today this company is seen as the foundation of the Çalık success story. In the same year, Çalık Energie was founded. The holding company was founded in 1997.

Activities abroad

The company's executive board, Ahmet Çalık , made textile investments in Turkmenistan in the early 1990s . There he was able to quickly make himself popular with the late President Saparmyrat Nyýazow . He arranged for the Ruhnama to be translated into Turkish and English . The rapprochement with the dictator went so far that he even gave him the post of deputy minister. During this time Çalık is said to have amassed a billion-dollar fortune. In addition, Calik Holding is involved in Iraq and endeavors to implement further projects in Iraq.

criticism

The media empire Sabah , which was sold by the Turkish state and which includes daily newspapers, magazines and television stations, was bought by the Çalık Group as the only bidder in the tender for USD 1.1 billion on April 22, 2008. To purchase this media group, Çalık received a loan of US $ 770 million from the state banks Halkbank and Vakıfbank . The sale provoked a storm of indignation across Turkey, not only because there were preferential loan conditions from state banks, but also because Çalık has a reputation for being particularly close to Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi . The then deputy chairman of the opposition CHP Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu accused Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of campaigning for borrowing. President Abdullah Gül admitted that he introduced Çalik to the ruler of Qatar, Hamad bin Chalifa Al Thani , who in turn has a 25% stake in the media group through one of his companies.

Berat Albayrak , Erdoğan's son-in-law, who became CEO of the Çalık Group at the age of 29, is also criticized .

Further criticism arose when Çalık Holding translated the Turkmen President's book Ruhnama into Turkish and English.
