Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu (born December 17, 1948 in Ballıca , Tunceli ) is a Turkish politician. Since 2010 he has been chairman of the Kemalist - social democratic CHP , the largest opposition faction in the Turkish parliament .

Life

Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu comes from the Alevi family Cebeligiller . Kemal's father changed the family name to Kılıçdaroğlu in 1950 based on the nickname (Lakab) of his own father.

He attended elementary and middle school in Erciş , Tunceli , Genç and Elazığ . In 1971, Kılıçdaroğlu completed a bachelor's degree in economics at the Academy for Economics and Administration in Ankara ( Gazi Üniversitesi ). He later worked in accounting at the Ministry of Finance until 1983. He also spent a year in France. Kılıçdaroğlu has been married to Selvi Kılıçdaroğlu since 1974 and has three children. In 1983 he became General Director of Income at the Ministry of Finance. In 1991 he was general director of the social insurance company Bağ-Kur , 1992 to 1999 of the social insurance institution ( SSK ). He then joined the Democratic Left Party (DSP) of Prime Minister Bülent Ecevit .

politics

In the parliamentary elections in 2002 and in the subsequent elections in 2007 , he was elected a member of the Grand National Assembly as a candidate for the Istanbul constituency for the laicist Republican People's Party CHP founded by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in 1923 . Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu was nicknamed Gandi Kemal by the Turkish and international press because of his calm manner and external resemblance to Mahatma Gandhi .

Kılıçdaroğlu became known in the media for investigating embezzlement and embezzlement and for fighting corruption in the administration and domestic politics of Turkey. The suspects included high-ranking AKP politicians such as Şaban Dişli, Dengir Mir Mehmet Fırat and Melih Gökçek . The CHP made him a candidate for Mayor of Istanbul in the 2009 local elections in Turkey . He received over 35 percent of the vote; the incumbent mayor Kadir Topbaş (AKP) was re-elected.

On May 22, 2010, Kılıçdaroğlu was elected 7th party chairman at the 33rd party congress of the CHP with 100% of the valid votes cast. In the parliamentary elections in 2011 on June 12, under his chairmanship, the CHP became the second largest party in the 24th term of the Turkish parliament with 25.95 percent of the vote and 135 members . At home and abroad, Kılıçdaroğlu's election was seen as a signal that the CHP, which had recently attracted attention mainly for its nationalist rhetoric, was returning to genuinely left-wing and social democratic politics.

In August 2010, Kılıçdaroğlu said to the PKK : “These are terrorists who are not interested in a constructive solution. We know that, and the PKK knows that too. "

On August 30, 2012, Kılıçdaroğlu was elected Vice President of the Socialist International (SI).

On May 15, 2013 a meeting with the chairman of the social democratic group in the European Parliament Hannes Swoboda ( SPÖ ) was canceled because Kılıçdaroğlu sharply criticized the increasingly authoritarian course of Turkish Prime Minister Erdoğan and described him as a dictator. At a press conference in Brussels, Kılıçdaroğlu said that the difference in the understanding of democracy between Syria's ruler Bashar al-Assad and Prime Minister Erdoğan was only shades. Both have special courts and prosecutors. The media would be given instructions and determined which journalists would go to jail. He was referring to the worsening freedom of the press in Turkey under Erdoğan. SPÖ European parliamentarian Hannes Swoboda replied that it was unacceptable to compare Erdoğan with al-Assad.

In the attempted coup on July 15, 2016, Kılıçdaroğlu and his party sided with President Erdogan. In protest he had never entered Erdogan's new presidential palace , the construction of which had been condemned by several judicial authorities as unlawful, until after the attempted coup; if an extraordinary situation, a national crisis, occurs in the country, he will do so, and it has now occurred.

On August 25, 2016, there was an attack in the Artvin region on the column of vehicles in which Kılıçdaroğlu was, in which one soldier of the escort was killed and two others injured. The attack caused a shock wave in Turkish politics; Interior Minister Efkan Ala said the attack was carried out by PKK terrorists. Prime Minister Yildirim spoke of a "vile terrorist attack on democratic stability and social peace". He aims to "increase the chaos in the country". The pro-Kurdish HDP , which the government has often accused of supporting the PKK, also condemned the attack.

In view of the government's radical action against actual or alleged opposition members and the restrictions on freedom of the press and freedom of expression, Kilicdaroglu criticized the AKP and the government at the end of October 2016 ; he said there was an ideological kinship between the AKP and the IS. On November 8, 2016, it became known that President Erdogan had filed a criminal complaint with the Ankara Public Prosecutor's office for “serious insult” against all CHP MPs (including Kılıçdaroğlu).

On June 15, 2017, Kılıçdaroğlu started a public protest march ( Adalet yürüyüşü , “ Justice March ”) from Ankara to Istanbul. The occasion was the conviction of his party and parliamentary colleague Enis Berberoğlu to a 25-year prison sentence for treason and his subsequent arrest. The conviction was possible because Kılıçdaroğlu and his party had approved a constitutional amendment to lift immunity the previous year. The goal of the march was the Maltepe prison , where Berberoğlu is incarcerated. On the approximately 400-kilometer route, Kılıçdaroğlu was accompanied by thousands of supporters who carried signs saying adalet ( Turkish justice ). Kılıçdaroğlu and President Erdoğan accused each other of influencing the judiciary in connection with the events. Erdoğan threatened that Kılıçdaroğlu's behavior would have consequences.

After 23 days, Kılıçdaroğlu reached Istanbul Province on July 7, 2017. The final rally took place on July 9, 2017 in Istanbul- Maltepe . According to the organizers, up to two million people took part; opposition media reported more than 100,000 participants.

After President Erdogan brought the parliamentary and presidential elections forward to June 2018 in April , the opposition parties CHP and IYI have moved together and founded an electoral alliance , as Kılıçdaroğlu and Meral Akşener announced after previous talks.

On April 21, 2019, Kılıçdaroğlu was physically assaulted at a soldier's funeral in Çubuk , after which he had to be taken to a house there to temporarily ensure his safety. According to the footage, some attackers also wanted to set fire to this house. Kılıçdaroğlu was punched in the face, among others, but was not injured. As it turned out, this person was an AKP member , but was kicked out of the party the next day, the AKP spokesman announced. A total of nine people were arrested for this in the following days. The act was condemned from many quarters (including President Erdoğan ), and the CHP and Kılıçdaroğlu spoke of a planned action.
