Erciş ( eɾdʒiʃ ; Armenian Ականց Akants , Kurdish Erdîş ; formerly also called Argis or Արճեշ Artchesh ) is a former district in the eastern Anatolian city of Van with the rank of a municipality. It is located in the northwest of the province and borders the Ağrı and Bitlis provinces to the north and west . The majority of the population consists of Kurds ; previously, until the genocide of 1915, the majority consisted of Armenians .
geography
The city of Erciş is located in a valley on Lake Van , which is bordered by the Ala Dağlar and the Süphan Dağı and is very fertile. The region is rich in water and is traversed by many rivers and streams. Of these, the Zeylan Deresi, the Deliçay, the Irşat çayı and the Tekevler çayı flow into Lake Van. There is a dam each at Zeylan and Deliçay. Notable mountains are Aksurik, Zernaki, Kızılkaya Tepeleri, Ala Dağlar and Meydan Dağları.
history
The name Erciş could come from the Urartian king Argišti II . Another possibility would be that the name Erciş comes from the former Urartian capital Arzaškun . Erciş has many archaeological finds.
The history of Erciş goes back to the time of Urartu. Erciş belonged to the principality of the Ahlat Shahs from the early 12th to the early 13th century and was later the capital of the Qara Qoyunlu . From the 18th century the old town (historically Artchesh) slowly disappeared due to the rise of Lake Van ; in the second half of the 19th century the buildings, churches and houses were no longer visible.
After a flood in 1841, Erciş was abandoned and rebuilt at another location. The city was relocated to Alada, a higher place in the north. The newly built city was called Akants (Նոր Արճեշ ɑɾtʃɛʃ , "New Artchesh" in Armenian ).
At the beginning of the 20th century the population of the Kasaba Ercis consisted of 1490 Armenians, 60 Jews and 630 Muslims. In July 1930 the Zilan massacre (Kurd. Komkujiya Zîlan ) took place in Erciş . During the Ararat uprisings, the Turkish army, under the orders of the state founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, massacred the city, which is mainly inhabited by Kurds. Thousands of Kurds fell victim to the massacre.
On October 23, 2011, a severe earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 occurred in the province of Van , in which Erciş was the hardest hit city.
politics
In the 2014 local elections, Diba Keskin and Abdurrahman Çağan were elected co-mayors with 49.5% of the vote. Mayor Diba Keskin of the city of Erciş has been in custody since November 14, 2015, as she is accused of having financially supported the PKK and Koma Civakên Kurdistan with state funds. Erciş is currently under compulsory administration by the Turkish state. Mayor Diba Keskin and Abdurrahman Çağan were sentenced to 13 years and 9 months in prison on March 13, 2017.
