Edremit ( Armenian Արտամետ Artamed , Kurdish Ertemêtan ) is a former district in the eastern Anatolian city of Van with the rank of a municipality ( Belediye ). Edremit is centrally located in the province on the southeast coast of Lake Van . The population density is almost five times that of the province. The community consists of 28 districts ( Mahalle ), which were villages ( Köy ) before the administrative reform .

history

According to the Armenian scholar Towma Arzruni , the Ardamad Castle, which gives the place its name, was built in 100 BC. In 1914, around 720 Armenian and 2500 Kurdish residents lived here . In 1928 the place was still called Edremid . The similarity of the name to the place Edremit on the Aegean Sea is a coincidence.

The district was only founded in 1960 with the name Sarmansuyu and later renamed Gümüşdere . The name Sarmansuyu is derived from the canals that were built by the Urartian king Menua in the 8th century BC. Were built. The place has been called Edremit since 1990.

In September 2016, the incumbent mayor, Sevil Rojbin Çetin, was replaced by a statutory order for the support of a terrorist organization by a state official.

Inscriptions Menuas

There is an inscription in a garden on the Menua Canal (inscription 69 near Harutjunjan): Ḫaldi the Mighty. Menua, son of Išpuini , created this canal. Its name is Menua Canal ( Menuai pili ). An identical inscription (No. 65 near Harutjunjan) is in the wall of the canal itself.

Another, more detailed rock inscription (inscription 64 near Harutjunjan) is on a large boulder on the banks of the Menua Canal. It was presented by Lehmann-Haupt and Walter Belck as early as 1882 . The beginning is identical to the garden inscription. In the 4th line Menua names his titles, then follows the usual curse against those who destroy or erase this inscription “or say to someone else 'I have dug this canal': the god Ḫaldi should destroy it completely, the god Teišeba, the god Šiwini , all gods ...
