Gevaş (formerly Armenian Ոստան Vostan ) is a former district in the Eastern Anatolian city of Van with the rank of a municipality ( Belediye ). Gevaş is located in the west of the province on the south bank of Lake Van and borders on the Bitlis province in the west . Gevaş County also includes part of Lake Van with Akdamar Island . The city lies between Lake Van and Mount Artos (3650 m), which is part of the south-eastern Taurus Mountains . The community consists of 38 districts ( Mahalle ) that were villages ( Köy ) before the administrative reform .
The name Vostan (actually Vostikan) is a title used by Sassanid military governors. They ruled the then Armenian province of the Sassanid Empire from the city of Gevaş. So the name of the title passed on to the city. Vastankalesi Castle on the outskirts still reminds of the town's old name.
A little outside on the embankment there is a small cemetery with some overturned Seljuk gravestones and the Halim Hatun door besi . This is a polygonal tomb from 1322, which contains a coffin chamber in the basement and a prayer room above. The building is covered with a pointed stone roof with a frieze on the underside . The entrances are decorated with a stalactite vault.
