Justice march route

The Justice March (also March of Justice , Turkish : Adalet yürüyüşü ) was a protest event of the Turkish civil society around the opposition politician Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu . As a sign of resistance, he and his supporters ran 450 kilometers from Ankara to Istanbul . According to media reports, the final rally took place on July 9, 2017 in Maltepe on the banks of the Marmara Sea in front of more than two million participants.

The march was a protest against the repressive policies of the Turkish government after the attempted coup in Turkey . As a result, at least 50,000 people have been arrested and 150,000 have been released from civil service. The immediate trigger was the long prison sentence for the CHP politician Enis Berberoğlu for the Cumhuriyet trial . The prison sentence was only possible because the CHP had also agreed to a constitutional amendment the previous year that made it much easier to lift the immunity of MPs, which was initially only intended for the HDP .

The participants ran from June 15 to July 9, 2017. They covered around 20 kilometers a day. In addition to supporters of the political opposition, the participants also included trade unionists, artists, journalists, academics, football fans and representatives of the Kurds. The Kurdish HDP hesitated for a long time whether to participate because the Kurds felt abandoned by the CHP and Kılıçdaroğlu in the actions of the government in Sur and Cizre and in the lifting of the immunity of their MPs and the party leaders. It was not until the 19th day of the march that the Kurdish opposition party took part in the march.

Reactions

  • Recep Tayyip Erdoğan declared the march illegal. He accused the demonstrators of being close to the Gülen movement , which he also blames for the attempted coup.
  • Binali Yıldırım said that justice cannot be found on the street and called the march a provocation.
  • The HDP affirmed that it would not bow to the "coup against the opposition".
  • Devlet Bahçeli accused Kılıçdaroğlu of “exaggeration” and “deliberately causing chaos”.
  • Meral Akşener said that everyone should think if the opposition leader had no choice but to take to the streets with an “Adalet sign” .
