Richard P. Rumelt

Richard Poste Rumelt (born November 10, 1942 , Washington, DC ) is the Harry and Elsa Kunin Professor of Business & Society at the Anderson School of Management at the University of California .

Life

After earning a master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley, Rumelt worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory from 1963 to 1965 . He studied decision theory and strategy at Harvard Business School and graduated in 1972 with a doctorate.

From 1972 to 1976 he taught at Harvard Business School. He spent two of these years in Tehran to found the Iran Center for Management Studies.

In 1976 he moved to the University of California in Los Angeles. From 1992 to 1996 he took a long-term leave of absence and taught at INSEAD in France.

Rumelt is one of the founders of the resource-based strategy approach. His research on diversification strategies , the sources of sustainable strategic advantages , conceptual and theoretical foundations for business strategy made him an influential researcher. He is a co-founder and chairman of the Strategic Management Society from 1995 to 1998.

In addition to the professorship, Rumelt also advises companies, non-profit organizations , the Department of Defense and various governments.

Awards

He was awarded the Irwin Price for his book Strategy, Structure, and Economic Performance . In 1997 he was honored with a Best Paper Award from the best paper prize ” Strategic Management Journal .
