Enis Berberoğlu

Kadri Enis Berberoğlu (born June 5, 1956 in Istanbul ) is a Turkish journalist and politician of the Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi . He was editor-in-chief of the newspaper Hürriyet from 2009 to 2014. He was taken into custody in 2017. In June 2017, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu , on the other hand, initiated a protest march from Ankara to Istanbul in the summer of 2017. In the parliamentary elections on June 24, 2018 , Berberoğlu was re-elected as a CHP MP.

Journalistic career

Berberoğlu attended the Austrian St. Georgs College and studied economics at the Boğaziçi University in Istanbul. From 1981 Berberoğlu worked as a journalist for the Dünya newspaper and later for the Hürriyet and Radikal newspapers . He worked as a correspondent in Bonn, Ankara and Istanbul. During the Second Gulf War , Berberoğlu was a war correspondent in Baghdad.

Berberoğlu held a leading position at CNN Türk's economic department and was editor-in-chief of Hürriyet from 2009 to 2014. He then wrote for the Sözcü .

politics

In 2014 Berberoğlu was elected to the board of the Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi and was a member of the 25th and 26th legislative periods of the Turkish National Assembly . He was re-elected in the parliamentary elections in June 2018 .

prison sentence

On June 14, 2017, he was sentenced to 25 years' imprisonment for espionage for leaked footage of secret deliveries of military equipment and ammunition by the Turkish intelligence service Millî İstihbarat Teşkilâtı to rebels in Syria to Can Dündar and Erdem Gül from the Cumhuriyet newspaper . In response to his arrest, his party organized the justice march , even though the CHP had made it possible to lift Berberoğlu's immunity and thus the sentence by approving a constitutional amendment.

On October 10, 2017, an appeals court overturned the first instance judgment. In September 2018, an appeals court upheld Berberoğlu's sentence of several years. At the same time it decided that Berberoğlu should be released from pre-trial detention while he is a member of parliament.
