Sözcü ( speaker ) is a Turkish daily newspaper based in Istanbul . On the list of Turkish newspapers with the highest circulation , it currently ranks fourth (as of January 2017). Sözcü has also been distributed in Germany since January 21, 2013 , although there are no Sunday editions in Europe. Since September 1, 2015, the motto of the newspaper Sözcü susarsa Türkiye susar (“When Sözcü is silent, Turkey is silent”) has been printed on the title page .

Forerunner Gözcü

From May 15, 1996 a daily newspaper called Gözcü (Guardian) appeared in the Doğan media group . While the quality newspaper Radikal, published only a few weeks earlier by the same publishing house, had a left-wing liberal orientation, the tabloid Gözcü pursued a strictly nationalist and Kemalist line. It was conservative but secular . After the Justice and Recovery Party (AKP) came to power in late 2002 , Gözcü took a clearly oppositional stance. Most recently it achieved a circulation of around 130,000 copies sold daily.

With the issue of April 1, 2007, Gözcü was discontinued. Rahmi Turan, editor-in-chief of Gözcü in the eleven years of its publication , justified the closure with a lack of profitability. In view of the sales figures available, critics considered this representation to be implausible. They suspected that publisher Aydın Doğan had stopped the newspaper for political reasons because it displeased the AKP government of then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan . The journalist Emin Çölaşan , who was still the author of the Doğan newspaper Hürriyet when Gözcü was closed and a columnist at Sözcü since 2009 , later doubted that the paper had been discontinued for economic reasons and described the closure as a “surrender” of the publisher.

Foundation of Sözcü

After Gözcü was discontinued , a group around the then 36-year-old entrepreneur Burak Akbay bought Gözcü's naming rights . From June 27, 2007 she began to publish under the roof of the newly founded publishing house Estetik Yayıncılık Sözcü . In the motto with which the new newspaper appeared in its early years (Cumhuriyetin Gözcüsü Sözcü Gazetesi - newspaper Sözcü, Guardian of the Republic) , the reference to the previous paper was clear. In terms of content, Sözcü tied seamlessly to the previous sheet .

Some of Sözcü's editors and authors came from Gözcü , others joined them from other newspapers, above all from Hürriyet . Over time, Sözcü developed into a reservoir for well-known Kemalist , especially right-wing Kemalist , authors who had been dismissed elsewhere. Emin Çölaşan, Yılmaz Özdil , Bekir Coşkun (via Habertürk ) and finally the former Gözcü editor-in-chief Rahmi Turan came from Hürriyet . Of Star TV and Milliyet was Uğur Dündar fetched. Other prominent authors are the former President of the Turkish Constitutional Court Yekta Güngör Özden and the journalist Soner Yalçın .

The newspaper is characterized by long, combative to aggressive headlines, which often extend over two or more lines. Although Sözcü is by far the most widely circulated opposition newspaper in Turkey, it is much less cited in foreign media than Cumhuriyet , BirGün or the online newspaper Diken .

Sözcü is the third largest Turkish daily newspaper with a circulation of around 276,000 copies and the last major opposition medium that has not yet been attacked. The right-wing Kemalist tabloid has been able to increase its circulation considerably in recent years, as newspapers such as Radikal , Milliyet or Hürriyet have either been completely discontinued or largely trimmed to government policy.

In January 2013, the publisher of Sözcü submitted a takeover offer for the insolvent Frankfurter Rundschau . The offer extended the sales negotiations for the bankrupt newspaper, but was rejected by the creditors.

Criminal proceedings

According to his statement, President Erdoğan had filed around 30 criminal charges against Sözcü author Emin Çölaşan for "insulting the President" by the summer . In October 2015, Sözcü author Necati Doğru was sentenced in the first instance to 11 months in prison for the same offense. The following year, Nasuh Mahruki, founder of the Akut aid organization and author of Sözcü , was arrested for the same reason and released subject to conditions after a judicial review.

On December 1, 2014, the headline of Sözcü read “Landing place in the forest especially for Davutoğlu ”. For this false report, Sözcü was sentenced to pay symbolic compensation for pain and suffering.

In April 2015, Sözcü was sentenced to a symbolic fine of TL 5,000 for headline attributing to Erdoğan as owning mansions that belonged to someone else.

On May 19, 2017, the owner and editor of the paper, Buray Akbay, and three employees of the paper were put out for arrest. Reporter Gökmen Ulu and online boss Mediha Olgun were arrested and their homes were searched. According to the state news agency Anadolu Ajansı, the Istanbul public prosecutor's office is investigating the operations against the alleged terrorist organization FETÖ for “armed uprising against the government” and “crimes in favor of the Gülen movement without belonging to the organization”. Akbay is said to have been abroad at the time. On May 20, 2017, Sözcü appeared with 20 blank pages in the Turkish edition and ten in the international edition. On the first page were only the words 19 Mayıs (May 19), Basın özgürlüğü (freedom of the press) and Özel Sayısı .

criticism

Critics from the left as well as from those around the AKP repeatedly accuse Sözcü of hate speech and racism , especially against Kurds , Armenians and refugees from Syria . Sözcü's false reports were discussed in the Turkish media. They particularly affect Erdoğan, his family and the AKP. The left website evrensel.net criticized a report by Sözcü about Syrian refugees as being racist. In the headline, Sözcü had suggested that Syrians in Turkey were leading a lotter life. Sözcü rejects this criticism.

After the resolution of the German Bundestag on the Armenian genocide in June 2016, the headline in German was “Ashamed!” Sözcü also printed a photo montage of Angela Merkel with a Hitler mustache , a swastika armband and an SA uniform .

Sister newspapers

Sports newspaper AMK

From 2007 the sports daily newspaper Fotogol was published by the same publisher . It was discontinued in the summer of 2002. Their successor was the sports newspaper AMK on June 9, 2012 , the abbreviation for Açık Mert Korkusuz ( open, courageous, fearless ). Feminists criticized the name because AMK is also an abbreviation for a vulgar , sexist expression. The similarity is described as wanted. The paper currently (as of January 2017) has a daily circulation of 10,562 copies.

Tabloid Korkusuz

Since 29 November 2014, the even more tabloid appears sözcü offshoot Korkusuz (Fearless) . The sold circulation in January 2017 was 39,917 copies a day. The content and personnel overlaps with the main sheet are large, the website is www.korkusuz.com.tr .

Satirical supplement Gırgır

The free supplement Gırgır has been published every Saturday since May 2015, but apart from the name it has nothing to do with the satirical magazine of the 1980s, which was then the third largest satirical magazine in the world with half a million copies sold per week.

TV station Halk TV

Since 2013, the television broadcaster Halk TV, which was founded by the then CHP chairman Deniz Baykal , has also belonged to the same publisher. While the broadcaster continues to be accused of being a party broadcaster when it comes to selecting interview partners, Sözcü and its sister newspapers are more politically independent. Furthermore, a rejection of the ruling party AKP and the pro-Kurdish opposition party HDP is accused in headlines and commentators.
