Diken is a Turkish internet newspaper . Even if the editor emphasizes that journalists should in principle keep a critical distance from any government, Diken is counted among the media that are in particular opposition to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the ruling Justice and Recovery Party (AKP). She is also quoted as such in foreign media.

history

Diken (“sting”) was founded in January 2014 by Harun Simavi, a great-grandson of the publisher and Hürriyet founder Sedat Simavi . Well-known authors in Turkey include Amberin Zaman , Hayko Bağdat , Mehveş Evin, Levent Gültekin, Mustafa Dağıstanlı and Umut Özkırımlı.

In February 2016, Facebook deleted, without giving a reason, a comment by the Turkish-Armenian author Hayko Bağdat on the fighting between Turkish security forces and militant supporters of the banned PKK in the small town of Cizre .

In September 2016, Diken editor Tunca Öğreten exposed the involvement of Berat Albayrak , energy minister and Erdoğan's son-in-law, in possibly illegal oil deals in northern Iraq . The basis was Albayrak's emails that the RedHack hacking group leaked to some media.

In November 2016, the journalist Amberin Zaman reported that a certain Mehmet Ali Yalçındağ was part of the foreign policy network of US President Donald Trump . Yalçındağ is the son-in-law of the Turkish publisher Aydın Doğan ; The leaked emails revealed that Yalçındağ had attempted to influence media coverage of the Doğan group in favor of the AKP government. After these emails became known, he had to give up his post as a board member at Doğan. International media took up the proximity between Trump and Yalçındağ, citing Diken. Amberin Zaman, for a time Turkey correspondent for the Economist , was withdrawn a little later on the Turkish accreditation.

On December 25, Diken editor Öğreten and five other journalists were arrested by various Turkish media in connection with an investigation against RedHack. Three, including Öğreten, were arrested on January 17, 2017 on suspicion of membership in a terrorist organization.

Trivia

Diken responded to the increasing number of libel lawsuits by President Erdoğan in autumn 2015 with a separate column “Erdogan insult of the day”, under which new lawsuits and judgments on the subject are reported. Sometimes several episodes of this rubric appear on the same day.

Towards the evening of each day, a kind of digital front page appears that is designed like the front page of a printed magazine.
