Gulen is a Norwegian municipality in the Sogn district in Fylke Vestland with 2297 inhabitants (as of February 27, 2020). The administrative center is Eivindvik .

Gulen is located on the southern bank of the Sognefjord , which flows into the Atlantic here . Gulen includes more than 1500 mostly uninhabited islands, which make up about 20% of the area of ​​the municipality. The highest point in the municipality is Svadfjellet, which belongs to Stølsheimen, at 877.8 meters.

Gulen borders Høyanger to the east and Masfjorden to the southeast . Alver , Austrheim and Fedje are south of the Fensfjord and Hyllestad and Solund are north of the Sognefjord .

Gulen is connected to the road network via Riksvei 57 and Europastraße 39 . There is an express boat connection with Bergen .

The proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf Stream ensure a typical maritime climate in Gulen with mild winters and cool summers. The average temperature in the coldest month of February is 0.8 ° C and in the warmest month of July 13.5 ° C. The places Brekke and Takle are also considered to be some of the wettest places in Norway. Brekke has held the Norwegian precipitation record since 1990 with 5595 mm of rain within a calendar year.

history

Gulen Church was built in 1863 and expanded in 1938 and 1963. In 1905 a baptismal font from around the year 1000 was installed there.

Until the end of 2019, Gulen belonged to the province of Sogn og Fjordane , which was transferred to the newly created Fylke Vestland as part of the state- wide regional reform .

The residents of the commune are called Guling . As in almost all municipalities in the province of Vestland , the official language form is Nynorsk , which is the rarer of the two Norwegian written languages. The community's population is mostly scattered along the fjords and on the shores of the largest islands. Tettsted is next to the main town Eivindvik with 315 inhabitants (January 2019) and Byrknes (294 inhabitants, January 2019) on the largest island of Byrknesøy . As in many rural communities, the population has been declining for years.
