The Fensfjord is a fjord in the central area of the Norwegian province of Vestland .

geography

The fjord is about 30 kilometers long and begins in the North Sea at the Holmengrå lighthouse . It runs from there in a south-easterly direction, past the communities of Austrheim , Gulen , Alver and Masfjorden and ends at the border between Alver and Masfjorden. There it divides into two foothills: the Masfjord branches off in a northeastern direction, while the Austfjord is the extension of the Fensfjord through the municipality of Alver in a southeastern direction. This is where the fjord is deepest with a depth of around 688 meters.

The fjord is 3 to 5 kilometers wide. In the northern part of the fjord are the islands of Byrknesøyna, Mjømna and Sandøyna. The island of Fosnøyna is in the south, as is the Lindås peninsula.

traffic

The Mongstad refinery

A car ferry runs from Sløvåg in Gulen to Mongstad in Alver; it connects two sections of the Fv57 road.

There is a lot of shipping traffic on the section of the Fensfjord near the mouth. This is due to the oil refinery in Mongstad, at whose port around 2000 ships dock each year.

tourism

The fjord is popular with fishing tourists. There are therefore many holiday accommodations in its vicinity.
