Uğur Dündar (born January 1, 1943 in Silivri , Istanbul ) is a Turkish journalist . He is considered to be the first investigative television journalist in Turkey.

Life

Dündar attended the Vefa high school in Eminönü . He then studied journalism at the Faculty of Economics at Istanbul University . In 1970 he passed the entrance examination as a television presenter for the state broadcaster TRT . In the same year he took the BBC's television production and direction course . Until 1990 he worked at TRT as a producer, director and presenter.

In 1992 Dündar switched to Show TV , where he started his discussion and political program Arena . He continued this broadcast on Kanal D (1995-2008) and Star TV (2008-2011). There, as the daily Cumhuriyet reported, he was dismissed under pressure from then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan . The show has been on Halk TV since 2013 and is now called Halk Arenası "Volksarena", taking up the name of the station (in German: "Volks-TV").

In addition to his work for television, Dündar worked from 1986 to 2000 as a columnist for the daily Hürriyet . He then wrote for Sabah , Star and Milliyet . He has been writing for Sözcü since 2012 . In April 2014, he was sentenced to 11 months and 20 days imprisonment for a column for insulting then Minister of Transport, Binali Yıldırım . The sentence has been suspended.

Dündar is married and has four children.
